Hi guys,
Could you help me with the following?
Ah ny is the diminutive of Channy?
I mean every Channy can be called as Ah ny? Becasue I know a girl called Channy, but others call her Ah ny. And I'd like to know it is a regular diminutive, or it is only in her case.
Also please tell me the pronunciation of Ah ny please.
Thank you in advance
Khmer name
Adding "Ah" before a name/part name is kinda like a nickname, but only used with younger people, and generally only with those that you are close to.
I'm not a negative person, I encourage people all the time...it's usually to f**k off! But, whatever.

Channy is spelt - ចាន់ នី - pronounced Chan nii (chan'nee) the reason why Ny is short for Channy is because thats how its spelt as kind of 2 separate words ចាន់(Chan) នី(Nii)
as PSD said using the word Ah before someones name if they are close it can be cute/endearing, used usually by younger people <25
if said someone uses Ah before your name and they arent close to you, or your older it can be seen as rude
putting Ah infront of an adjective it can be used in a teasing way, again if they dont know you that well, its seen more insulting
Ah Mab - Fatty
Ah Svet - Skinny
Ah Chas - Old guy
Ah Chkut - Crazy guy
there is a similar word that you can put in front of a girls name in retaliation, the word "Mii" then the girls name (Mii Channy for example),
but be warned, girls can find this very insulting!
Mean Dtuk Mean Trey, Mean Loy Mean Srey

Many Western languages tend to pronounce the first syllable of a word/ name so if shortened that syllable is often used. In Khmer it's the opposite, usually the last syllable gets the emphasis so if a word / name is shortened that one's used. Panha (Panja) will not be shortened to Pan like Westerners expect but Nha / Nja for instance. Narin becomes Rin, etc. In front you can indeed add another word that will explain how you are related to that person.

"A" (Name) or Ah (Name) is simply an indication of closeness or familiarity as in a good friendship. Nothing more or less.
Most of my Cambodian female friends are addressed as A or Ah.
