Please help me translate this phrase to khmer. My daughter works at a wildlife sanctuary in northern Cambodia, and I am making a surprise for her, but want everything to make sense. Thanks!
"All good things are wild and free."

Probably want to get that double checked though before you go getting tattooed on your arse, but that's what I would say:
អ្វីអ្វីទាំងអស់ដែលជាល្អគឺជាព្រៃននិងសេរីដែរ។
awei-awei deng aus dial jea la'or gere jea bray nung sayree dier.

Tip.
Don't ask foreigners to translate to Khmer. They can translate from Khmer to English well but are very unlikely to accurately translate to Khmer. (Language will be clumsy, grammar or word order may be irregular)
The translated sentence would, most likely, be understood but will probably be unnatural and a little different to how a local would say it.
Khmer to English - ask a native English speaker.

This is an excellent point. The word structure is just too different and there are too many word choices Khmer wouldn't make. My Khmer teacher regularly says my translations are ឆ្គង (clumsy) even after nearly two years of studying.ផោមក្លិនស្អុយ wrote:Tip.

For instance all good things are wild and free
Wild doesn't work well in Khmer imo. It is not like in English. I would say
សំខាន់គឺជាសេរីហើយគ្មានទ្រុង
The important thing is to be free and without cages

This is always the problem with translation. Do you want it to sound poetic in the native tongue or do you want it to pass the reverse translation test. Poetry (meaning) vs instruction manuals (process).ផោមក្លិនស្អុយ wrote:Tip.

I think it works well. The term មនុស្សព្រៃ (wild person) is pretty common, although probably more negative than when applied in English. But that's just a cultural thing from a society that prizes conformity.merchantsmutual wrote:Wild doesn't work well in Khmer imo.
This is actually a super interesting one because if we break the meaning down into a more verbose form. For example:
All people that are good, perform actions that follow their natural instincts and are allowed to do so without internal or external hindrance.
The problem with this is that in a western society that prizes the rebel or the outlier so the sentence isn't a contradiction. In a society like this one that doesn't widely prize the outlier or the rebel the sentence is a contradiction, so therefore we have to translate the idea as stated, rather than the underlying meaning.

The problem is that I have read your effort already and I am polluted by your idea.
I understand perfectly what you have written and I think it makes sense.
I think I would have gone for គ្មានទ្រុង for wild (without a cage).
អ្វីអ្វីទាំងអស់ដែលជាល្អគឺជាព្រៃននិងសេរីដែរ។ would work, right? or is that technically saying free as in "free of charge"

No, it's the correct 'free'.dan54 wrote:អ្វីអ្វីទាំងអស់ដែលជាល្អគឺជាព្រៃននិងសេរីដែរ។ would work, right? or is that technically saying free as in "free of charge"
It's understandable but sounds very clumsy to me.

looks like im more poetic than the other posters, probably from translating too many songs lol
but my translation would be :
ទាំងអស់ដែលជាល្អត្រូវដុះឯងនិងសេរីភាព
Tang Os Dael Jia Laor Trov Doh Aing Nung Serey Phiap
"All that is good should grow by itself (like a wild flower) and be free"

Of course you have a more poetic soul, Jamie
You also have a questioning and intelligent mind...somewhat wasted in your choice of lifestyle, but who am I to talk?

The mind is not a vessel to be filled, but a fire to be kindled.
