What words do Khmers overuse the most?
Miguelito's thread about "actually" got me wondering. What English words do Khmers use disproportionately more often when speaking English compared to native English speakers?

That's a good one. Nowaday (few pronounce the S) is another one. Even if it doesn't logically apply to the sentence, they use to sound academic/educated ot something.

"Loy ort all Fri?"
Another favourite that I've seen countless times is a Khmer posting some sort of selfie on FB with the comment/description -
"nothing to say".

Haha, I always hear someone in my office say this whenever he calls/gets a call from a certain Japanese guy (one of the few non Khmers he calls). I thought it was just a bromance.violet wrote:I miss you (so much).
Shits me when someone i have only met once before says it.

"Yeah-yeah-yeah-yeah"/"cha-cha-cha-cha"/"baht-baht-baht-baht" which translates as: "I have already stopped listening to you, forgot everything you said, and am now thinking about something else, so please STFU."
I am sooooo very sorry if you can't understand or appreciate my sarcastic facetiousness.

That's what it may seem to us, but it just means "I am listening to you". Can be frustrating at times though.chkwoot wrote:"Yeah-yeah-yeah-yeah"/"cha-cha-cha-cha"/"baht-baht-baht-baht" which translates as: "I have already stopped listening to you, forgot everything you said, and am now thinking about something else, so please STFU."
Reminds me of a video teleconference I once had with Japanese. The engineers on my side were explaining a technical concept to them in English, and explained two different ways to make sure that they understood. They nodded and said "yah yah yah" throughout, so the engineers were convinced they understood, and when asked if they understood of course they said yes. After the meeting there was one Japanese in the room with us, so I pulled him aside and asked is he understood. He said that he did not. I had him call his counterparts, and it turned out they not one person actually understood. Surprise surprise.

You're a noob. You don't really know, yet. In another 10 years, you'll know more. But I'll have also learned more, therefore you'll always be a noob. I'm a noob compared to Lucky Lucan.Miguelito wrote:That's what it may seem to us, but it just means "I am listening to you".
