Hello. I've just found from the Typhoon Committee's page (http://www.typhooncommittee.org/tc-reti ... name-list/) that Sarika was replaced with Trases as a storm name.
Then I looked up this dictionary http://dictionary.tovnah.com and found only the word ត្រសេះ, with the pronunciation [trɑseh]. So I'd like to ask:
1. Do ត្រសេះ [trɑseh] and trases (from the Typhoon Committee's page) refer to the same word? If yes, why is the latter transcribed with the final consonant "s" instead of "h"? Or can ត្រសេះ be pronounced as [trɑses], with the final as well as [h]?
2. Does trases / ត្រសេះ refer to woodpeckers in general (a woodpecker of any kind) or only a specific species?
Thank you in advance.

The final character of ត្រសេះ is េះ, not ស. If I recall correctly, េះ is a short stopped 'ah', so the final sound should be something like 'sah' with (I think) a glottal stop.
The typhoon list refers to Philippines as the location, so not sure why they would use a Khmer word as the name. It may well be something in Tagalog?

the word would be pronounced Traseh, but how you would write it (Khmer style) would be Trases,
in Khmer there is no final "S" sound, they pronounce it with a "H" sound,
hence why a lot of Khmer miss pronounce English words like "Kiss" (Kih) and "Christmas" (Krismah)
ill try explain...
the S consonant ស when it is at the end of a word it becomes a H sound, eg. the word for "Very" ណាស់ - Nas - but its pronounced "Nah"
and this vowel ះ is also a H sound, eg. the word for "This" នេះ is pronounced Nih, but because the Khmers also use a S symbol for the H sound they then write it as Nis
heres the perfect example....
យប់នេះពិសេសណាស់ - Yub Nis Pises Nas - pronounced Yub Nih Piseh Nah - Tonight is very special
Mean Dtuk Mean Trey, Mean Loy Mean Srey

They already have a list of storm names to be used in alphabetical order of country names. http://www.typhooncommittee.org/list-of ... -cyclones/ The Philippines is the location where the storm named "Sarika" made landfall and caused a lot of damage, so the name "Sarika" was asked to be replaced.epidemiks wrote: The typhoon list refers to Philippines as the location, so not sure why they would use a Khmer word as the name. Ah I didn't know that ះ [h] can be transcribed with "S". Now I remember that I saw someone spelled these province names as "Kraches" and "Preas Vihear" too.Jamie_Lambo wrote: and this vowel ះ is also a H sound, eg. the word for "This" នេះ is pronounced Nih, but because the Khmers also use a S symbol for the H sound they then write it as Nis
