All I can do is recommend brands:
Pioneer
Sony
Senheiser
Sol Republic
Shure
AKG
etc.
The low end (for any of these with noticeable quality) is about $50, and will likely be earbuds.
With that said, if you can get a pair of Apple's newer earbuds they include with their shit,
they are a significant improvement over the old style, and maybe around $30, give or take--they sound like a few on ear headphones I've heard that sell for $125.
Spend $150 and you're solid. Do 200 up, and you're in heaven. Spend 3 grand, and you're a moron or you're wiping your ass with twenties. What it boils down to is comfort--do they stay in your ear when you work out (if you do), better sound isolation, a more balanced sound (unlike super bass-heavy heinously overpriced Beats), and larger magnets. Then there is general build--pay attention to the joints.
My favorite is a sweet pair of over ear dj/studio Pioneer cups, but they get hot, and I wouldn't want to walk down the street in Phnom Penh with them (no headphones for that matter). Earbuds are a better bet for that, and I've always loved Sony for this, even though I hate their laptops.
Studio (over-ear) tend to be the most comfortable and have the most balanced sound, but are the priciest and the biggest.
DJ headphones (on or over) are a great buy, ounce for quality, but typically get uncomfortable for long periods of time (on-ear, over an hour). They are nice because you can additionally flip them out to use as tiny speakers.
On ear (non-dj, non-studio) are a sort of retro/dated style, and don't seem to stay on too well, and lack oomph. They generally tend towards looking cheap. (I find myself pressing them to my ears to get the full sound).
Canal earbuds, are also a good bang for the buck. Some tend to be kind of fiddly in finding the physical sweet spot, but it's good because it's not as desirable to steal someone else's waxy little implant. My earbuds are this style.
Again, Apple's outer-ear earbuds (whatever the moniker is), are an exception to the above. Generally though, I find the outer-ear style to drop out and move around too much.
Then there's stuff that hooks around the ear, like a bluetooth thing--can't speak much on those. I suppose they stay on good.
Personally, I fucking hate the bulky on-wire volume control do-dad--gets in the way when I wrap the buds and I never use it. Takes the Zen right out.
I suppose wireless might be nice, but they would be damn easy to snag from your head...
(I'm listing new current price parameters from Amazon, btw)
Where?---I'll leave that to someone else.

I see lots of over ear headphones around for round 10$ but don't wanna be tricked by fake Sony fake anything. I guess crap is cheap period. so I should check these places on monivong you say.
thanks all.
I am looking for good bass responsive beat producing headphones
for sitting up at night and making intricate music.

I have Sennheiser HD518's, they are excellent.
Got a good deal from the Amazon UK black Friday deals week last year, no idea what they would cost in Phnom Penh.
I connect these to my laptop via a Bravo Audio V2 tube headphone amp,
a great little toy
Sadly both are back in the UK.

You tease us! I like that in-line amp! Wow! What a great idea for the MAXIMAL SOUND EXPERIENCE? How much for that gizmo?
I've had the luck to try on Bose's sound-cancelling headphones, it's like a gel double-piece/clear rubber comfort thingy on each ear, crescent-shaped gels, with a little super-slim iPod-sized in-line ACTIVE (battery-powered) noise canceller you then plug into your iPhone or what-have-you.
NICE. ALL I CAN SAY. Whirring aircon/fans, and white noise fades away. It's probably mandatory for people living here, its like what I imagine Ritalin to be like, less inputs from dogs, and traffic and karaoke machines, I bet.
Only set you back $300. I can see myself wearing it all day, it has a special design and is VERY comfortable, and SLIM, so I think you can wear a helmet over it (Bluetooth helmets not here yet ...)
You CAN hear voices, important sounds. But it doesn't resonate in your head, and you can fade away and focus much better ...

I have had the Sennheiser HD25 for about 10 years for DJ'ing and have had to replace only the earpads (the replacement velour ones are better in tropics than original leatherette ones ) andLexusSchmexus wrote:Sennheiser shop on Monivong (upstairs in the iOne store). The end.
Replacement headband foam padding.

There are better quality headphones out there but IMHO based on past experience they are tough and if a single part goes then it can be easily replaced unlike some other i have had like sony and pioneer.

The 'imusic' outfit at #90A Russian Boulevard has Yamaha and Polk Audio headphones. They are on the south side of Russian Boulevard just west of Mao Tse Toung. Design Audio (a few doors to the west) do not carry any headphones. Unfortunately, I don't think there is any place in Phnom Penh where you can sit down and compare various brands/models to find what sounds good to the listener. I did just that at Jet Live Audio in Bangkok recently and chose the Audio Technica ATH-M50's.

I ordered from Shenzhen Audio in Hong Kong, just US$ 69.98 at the moment with free delivery!!HotRecruiter wrote:You tease us! I like that in-line amp! Wow! What a great idea for the MAXIMAL SOUND EXPERIENCE? How much for that gizmo?
Only had a rushed evening to compare this with my other (Fiio E10) headphone amp, but the sound from this beauty was excellent.
