A few more thoughts on the perfect bar....
* Absolutely NO Khmer men should be employed in the bar ever at all. They either try too hard and end up irritating csutomers by getting in their faces and asking too many dumb questions or they stand around looking surly. Either way, they need to be outside where they belong looking after peoples' motos.
* The bar should be 'homely' and by that I mean neither a hotel lobby or a great white aircraft hanger. I don't give a fuck how cheap the drinks are in a warehouse with white walls and celings - I'd still pay more to drink in a homely hole in the wall.
* The female staff in a non hostess don't need to be attractive. In fact they can be butt ugly and as dumb as a bag of hammers as long as they get on with customers and and aren't AWOL or chatting up the motodops outside when my glass is empty.
Opening night!

As most people who have owner or worked in a bar for any length of time know, there is no one ingredient that will make a bar successful. although a single major flaw can be enough to kill a bar. For me to frequent a bar, it has to have ALL of the following:
-Friendly, reasonably happy staff (not just one or two members, but the majority)
-Reasonable drink prices compared to the competition
-A convenient location, preferably close to other bars for those nights when I am in the mood for a bar hop
-Air conditioning that actually works well and is turned on, or fans if they are able to keep the temperature comfortable
-Reasonably comfortable seating
-If they have music at anything more than background volume, it needs to be mostly rock, blues, jazz, or maybe country
-Music that is not too loud to talk over without shouting, unless it is a live music bar
-Cold beer
-No hassles (if they make a mistake it is fixed without complaint, the manager or owner is not constantly making excuses or telling me BS about something, and nobody is interrupting my conversation and bugging me every 5 minutes asking if I want another drink when the one I have is not empty or trying to give me back rubs, etc.)
-No rip off attempts
This is the bare minimum. The following are definite pluses, and a bar would need to have at least one of these to make my repeat visit list:
-Cheaper or larger drinks than the competition
-Unusually comfortable seating
-Good food (making a few things well beats the heck out of a large menu of mediocre grub)
-Free wi-fi
-Attractive female staff (but points off if they have a boyfriend or husband working there also)
-An unusually good beer or whiskey selection
-A TV playing American football and baseball (depending on the season) with sound
-Competent staff that speaks adequate English, meaning I can get prompt service and my order is correct (no J&B when I ordered Jim Beam, or draft beers that are half foam)
-The ability to usually keep everything on the drink (and if there is one, food) menu in stock, or at least a note or sign when something is out
-Friendly, reasonably happy staff (not just one or two members, but the majority)

I can see not having male bartenders, but it's been my experience that ladies generally will not go out to replenish stock. So if you run out of triple sec, you're s.o.l. if you order another margarita.* Absolutely NO Khmer men should be employed in the bar ever at all. They either try too hard and end up irritating csutomers by getting in their faces and asking too many dumb questions or they stand around looking surly. Either way, they need to be outside where they belong looking after peoples' motos.
The other problem with a male bartender in a hostess bar is that it seems common for his wife, or "wife" to work there also. This doesn't directly cause problems for the customers, but what ends up often happening is that his wife get jelous due to all the tarts working with her husband and usually cops an attitude. This can cause all sorts of problems for the owner, which then trickle down to the customers. This (amongst other causes) happened in a place I like to drink, and next thing you knew there weren't any girls working the bar except the male bartenders wife.
What's more, the owner of that particular establishment made the brilliant decision to not employ any hostesses for a while. Then he wondered why people stopped coming in...

That doesnt add up and doesnt last long.
How many businesses have you owned/run that have lasted more than a few months? None Id bet.
Good staff, nice comfortable furnishings and above all a good location all cost money.
Youre just another stupid useless fuck in SE Asia who wants evrything your own way but obviously havent got the skill, nous or balls to do anything yourself.
