Suziewong, why don't you go to local places, like Rock or any of the KTVs. Its only four or five dollars for a beer, and a small plate of fruit is only $15. When it comes to paying the bill, offer them one-tenth of the price, and explain how its a dirt poor country so that's all you're paying, they'll be sure to understand.
You can get a beer at Cavern for $1.50, is that too expensive?I could enjoy going to one of your bars and not be looked at like a cheap bastard.

Actually living in Cambodia, is far cheaper then living in America. I have a 3 bedroom 2 bathroom house near Martini pub. Nice area. I pay $200. a month. My sister has a 2 bedroom 1 bathroom house in Arizona U.S. she pays $850. per month A burger and a coke at Denny's cost me $9.50, 5 years ago when I went home for a visit. Here it is half that or less. Shall I go on. I think you are a little confused about the prices of things. You have gotten used to paying $3. for a lady drink and now think it is a bargain. For me it is just too expensive.

I think you are a bit confused , I haven't bought a lady drink in about 5 years. If they are too expensive, why not go somewhere else?suziewong wrote: I think you are a little confused about the prices of things. You have gotten used to paying $3. for a lady drink and now think it is a bargain.

I was about to bring that up: if you compare wages with prices Cambodia (rent, utilities, food, shopping supplies etc) is out of whack. I assume it's because of the high import duties.dv8inpp wrote:Well if I could cut my rent by75%, lower my wage costs by 50% and reduce stock prices by 50% and reduce my electricity bill by 75% we could probably do it. Let's call it going back in time 8 years.

and the need to import so many products at all--even rice sometimes (could be wrong about that) and other staples like veggies. (Ireland has same problem, likewise northern Canada, eg.) Somebody once told me that the high cost of living was due to the war period but I never really understood that, since nothing was being spent on infrastructure at the time, the 90s. Another dated post!

There's also the fact you don't often get any value from your staff even though you're paying them small wages. Cambodia has an unskilled, lazy workforce with no initiative. Not being derogatory, it's just the way it is. It's well documented that Vietnam textile factories only need hire about half the staff of the Cambodian factories to get the same output.
This means you have to spend more time training, instructing and fixing up fuckups which costs you time and money, lowering your efficiency and adding to your costs.

Not sure what a bottle costs, I was meaning drinks in a bar.dv8inpp wrote:What is the current price for a 1L of Johnnie Walker Black? Here it's about $24SunSan wrote:E.g. alcoholic drinks in Vietnam are cheaper than here. But LDs are more expensive. How do you explain that?
Vodka tonics go for 80k VND, 4 USD. Beer is regularly offered between 12 and 20k, 1/2 to 1 USD.
I only go for short trips, Dr. Seuss lives there, he'd know the retail price.

A few updates;
- I USED to live in Vietnam (thankfully, not anymore)
- I USED to be a non-alcoholic. Living in Vietnam has turned me into a vehement alcholic who spends half his time exercising and "giving up alcohol" and the other half of the time thoroughly enjoying alcoholic drinks that normally come with umbrellas or fancy stirrers (Im not an accomplished drinker, ok? - Im stilll earning the art.)
Tis true I normally live in the middle of bum fuck nowhere, as opposed to the big cities. In rural Vietnam, you could buy a whole bottle of local Vodka for 80,000VND. Even in a local "bar" a vodka tonic would only cost you $2.00
Tis true though... I couldnt tell you the price of a beer. Im the only Aussie around that hates the stuff.
