Best steak joint in PP?
Best steak joint in PP?
I will be departing the desert soon and heading back to Phnom Penh, I am really looking forward to several cold beers and a tasty, rare (beef) steak, its been far too long since I've had either. I have found the restaurants in PP to be a bit hit-and-miss when it comes to serving, and cooking, good quality steak, therefore I have come to ask the wise, and not-so wise, members of the K440 forum for your recommendations.
Obviously everyone will have their own preference, and I am sure there will be some heated debate, but what are your recommendations for;
1. Restaurant that serves top quality steak, cooked to your liking?
2. Best butchers/market for premium steak cuts to cook at home?
Cheers.

Steve's steakhouse is an absolute joke for meat, they can only manage hamburgers and (I suppose) some greek specialties.
NY Steak house is damn good .. but damn expensive, NY prices as well (30-40 for a regular steak, more with some side dishes, and 10% vat on top)
Armand is a good compromise for a small, upscale, xpat place (+- 20-25++)
Now if you want the low'n dirty (but still pretty good if you ask me) , hit savanna BBQ off sihanouk. Delicious fries and their steak (local beef) was $2.5 last time I checked .. take 2 for a fair western portion - full of locals and overall the best bang for your buck.

Here's another vote for Armand's. I like the Rib Eye. Bought a couple kilos of beef tenderloins at Dan Meat and they were like eating my shoes. I ended up braising the filets for 5 hrs and it ended up making a good bouef bourguignon. Not really a bargain at $18/kg. Local beef needs to be marinaded in sulfuric acid for about a week unless you're a hyena.

As anybody having that done to a prime piece of beef bloody well should be!I'm guessing someone requesting a well done steak would be themselves flambed and tossed to the dogs on 108.
Years ago I worked as a waiter in a very upscale hotel in Switzerland. Service was really old school and included preparing the Beef Tartare. I am doing the whole show here, throwing in the Capers and seasoning, putting the raw egg on top and serve it to the guests. But something is wrong: the punter is looking at me, looking at the Tartare, looking at me. "Sir, is there anything else I can do for you?" Answer: "Yes young man, you forgot to cook it".

If you don't kind plastic chairs and folding tables, go to Good Dreams on Monivong down south near the Rock.
Only $5.50 for a full round of steak. Probably better than all those other places, minus the ambiance. They have jars of beer, however, for cheap.
The steak has sliced of garlic stick into slits of the steak, then cooked all together. Tasty.
If you don't believe me, you miss out. Some people don't, to their loss (but not mine). However, their English is poor.
