There were a few hipster types there....I ignored them as a fact of life nowadays. Those girly boys are no match for Felgerchrist. Morticia told me one hipster guy's woman couldn't stop looking at me....probably had a booger in my nose or something. In any event, it's close and they have whiskey. Works for me.

Alchemy last night. Food was superb. I could not believe I had grilled brie in Phnom Penh...the drink menu is excellent.
The owner Jay was Johnny on the spot with making sure everything was ok and we had a good talk afterwards. Will be returning.
Was a bit loud, but that is because it had a lot of hipsters and a group of Chinese guys whoopin it up. That said...
One Chinese guy made it pretty clear that Morticia's boobs were on the menu because he couldn't stop drooling. I don't mind the casual look, but ya....there is a line. When we left he tried to say something cute and I think my body language and casual glare ended him mid sentence. A tuk tuk driver said something about she is lucky she has me to protect her....I told him he is lucky I have her to protect you from ME. He backed way off muttering sorry sorry sorry...jesus, you would think these guys never saw a pretty woman before.

Tried Alchemy last night with a date. I think it's got potential to be a great venue. I'm not into photographing my food ever, so no pics to share, but here's a few thoughts about it. Not really a review or write up as such.
Staff welcomed us in, which was helpful. We were seated by the door, me facing it, and I had a prime view every time guests arrived and stood at the door thinking it would open automatically, which it doesn't. Some worked it out, but others were just left stranded at the glass door until staff let them in!
I'd imagine on a dry night, the outdoor seating at the front would be very pleasant. The inside certainly is. Didn't really check out the back, but there seems to be a mix of benches, bar stools at the bar, big and small tables, but no tables for 2 diners only. It felt a little like we were taking up unecessary space when bigger groups arrived. Felger's party might have had to wait for a table. At least I think it was him.
We ordered a passionfruit Mojito and I tried the Saigon Blonde. Both were great. In fact if I hadn't been on my best behaviour I would have sunk a lot more of that beer. Massive drinks menu (a plus), and a not too big food menu (also a big plus.) There were maybe 12 or 15 food items to choose from I'd guess.
We ordered a mezze plate with hummus, baba ganoush, tzattziki etc, a beetroot salad bowl, and a french steak baguette type thing. All good. The salad especially and the french fries with the steak were delicious - twice cooked and done properly.
I guess any new place will have some teething problems. A couple of simple things like proper coasters or beer mats instead of tissues, and proper menus printed up - maybe they are finalizing things first.
Quite a team of barang staff, too.
Definitely worth a return visit. The food was good but the beers are what I'd like to investigate further.
They were busy for a shitty rainy night with flooded streets. All the best to them.

Hey, maybe we saw each other last night at Alchemy...Morticia, Me, GB8, and two other friends there. Rebo and wife were sitting in the corner...a veritable 440 meet up...almost.
Went to Long After Dark and sat upstairs until they kicked us back downstairs at Midnight....noise issues with neighbors probably, so a good policy. Hipster central. We left shortly after some millennial lit his girlfriends hair on fire...fucking burning hair smell..../puke.

Had 5 or so IPAs in Alchemy tonight. Nice setup. Some of the staff are idiots but not worse than expected.

Atta boy. Any ones from the US? I'll miss those craft brews. America truly has some great beers. I'd say we've came a long way since the shitty domestic only (bud, Miller, PBR etc) days.GMJS-440 wrote:Had 5 or so IPAs in Alchemy tonight. Nice setup. Anyone who doesn't like Capitalism is a pathetic loser. God bless the USA and no place else.

Thought Alchemy was ok if a little pricey - 3 bucks fifty for a draft - ok it was Saigon Blonde and has to be shipped over the border but it can't cost that much surely? 2 bucks fifty would seem more reasonable and no doubt a lot more would be sold. I like me suds and all that but I can get a nice cold in a block or two away in one of those Khmer joints for a fraction. Polished concrete is after all polished concrete whichever persuasion of customer frequents the bar and we're not talking about a major outlay on decor.
Fark me.... The amount of new bars in TTP that have opened in the last 6 months is unreal, most of them are shit though.
. Ellys bar on 135 is about the only true 'Cheers...where everybody knows your name' bar though, owned by an Aussie father and his son, fantastic hosts. They have a BBQ out front and most of their food is char grilled, very tasty. Smart tv which customers can choose their own music on and live music Thursday through to Sunday.
Alchemy, which claimed they were going to be a 'Cheers...where everybody knows your name' bar is nothing but an overpriced hipster joint. They were actually raided by the police last week at the request of local residents due to their late night loud music, and apparently the police discovered a few discrepancies with their licenses and shut them down, although they're still open so I guess that was all sorted.
New place on 446 looks set to open in the coming weeks, in the former 'Sisters' location, called 'The Vibe'. Construction and fit out has been going on for nearly 3 months, I'd hate to think how much they're spending doing up the place!
The Cool Lounge on 440 is a pretty sweet joint, owned by Khmerican deportees and supporting the Tiny Toonz NGO, if you don't like Hip Hop, don't go.
Gypsies Bar was sold and is now called ink and Drink, they have turned the upstairs into a tattoo studio and downstairs they play heavy metal music and videos of dudes riding bikes, weird, but much better than that Spanish shit that used to get thrashed.
Long After Dark, The whiskey joint on 450 looks dead most nights, they've started opening during the day to try and attract some food customers, but it appears theyve not done their market research and are failing miserably, been twice, never again, food was average and the drinks were overpriced... Good if you like whiskey but that's about it.
Tinis on 450, as I previously mentioned, appears to be a gay bar...so if you're that way inclined that's the place for you.
Roots n Burgers...shit food, nothing more to say.
Coffee Corner... Nice spot upstairs for people watching in the day time, but shit service and crap food.
Oh, and worthy of a non-mention is Ar-Kun, an Armenian food joint on 450..if you've had a few and see their sign advertising kebabs, don't bother! The only thing worthy of a mention from their menu is their home made hummus which is bloody good...but the lavash bread they serve it with, and which their kebabs are served in, is like chewing cardboard!
Many more I could comment on, but this is just a drunken 6 n the morning rant, will save the rest for another time

I did a three-night run in TTP a few weeks back on a visit to PP. I met Mr Drink and Mr Ink. It would be my home bar were I to set down roots. It always had customers. The front tables outside and even inside were nice and comfy. I remember the prices were reasonable and customers a cool mix of locals and expats. Didn't mind the music either. Overall, the bar's more my style, unlike Long After Dark and Alchemy, the former a dull looking place with no customers and the latter having a nice terrace, but with no customers. This was a Sunday-Tuesday mission.
It sure is quiet there on 155 after 10 o'clock. You couldn't get run over by a tuktuk even if you threw yourself into the street. Even the convenience stores shut at 10. Which might not be so bad if the temptations wind down early and you responsibly get home. I stayed at the New Midtown Hotel near the bottom of 155 where I see they're building a fast-food plaza on the south side of Super Duper Street (488).
