I see so many expats who drink, and do all sorts of other crazy things - none of which I do. Especially any long termer anywhere - I mean why gamble, booze, drug, or chase women to the point where you appear homeless and penniless? Why not, you know, explore the country, food and language?Lucky Lucan wrote:The word is observation you dope. Seen that coping mechanism so many times, It's barely noteworthy.
It seems that my small circle of friends is unusual in our sanity and normalcy.
Later, LL. I have better things to do than exchange internet posts with you.

You're coming across like a sanctimonious condescending ten-minute-expert twat. Why not shut your fucking trap, you obviously have no clue what I do. Stupid cunt.

Wow. You chose the wrong person to target with that ridiculous outburst. I suspect LL knows more about the country, language and food in his little finger than any relatively news arrival will ever know, and I include myself in that.
Out of order phnompenharrival.
You know Lucky, sometimes you do come across as being quite eloquent.Lucky Lucan wrote:You're coming across like a sanctimonious condescending ten-minute-expert twat. Why not shut your fucking trap, you obviously have no clue what I do. Stupid cunt.
One of your better retorts.

Sounds like his bestest and only friend is Captain America.
I came, I argued, I'm out
Congratulations on your circle of friends but, apart from them, you have definitely been meeting the wrong people. In my albeit limited experience - cue Mike Myers ironic tone - I have met veeeeeery few 'long termers' who are homeless, penniless or anything else you describe. Some even know the local language, and I even met one guy who had a (local) African friend (however he - the friend- wore shoes and listened to Roxy Music). The gamblers, boozers, druggies etc etc stay a few years and either self-detonate or are chucked out and return home to live in a council flat.phnompenharrival wrote:I see so many expats who drink, and do all sorts of other crazy things - none of which I do. You are all conflating my posts as only being about Cambodia. I am posting about Culture Shock and the reactions of local expats to that, and that is not limited to one country.scobienz wrote:Wow. Out of order phnompenharrival.
I have seen the same behaviours all over the world, in person and online, and they repeat with great regularity - it is as predictable as sunrise.

Excellent post this; vintage Lucan. Can't be bothered to read the other guy.Lucky Lucan wrote:You're coming across like a sanctimonious condescending ten-minute-expert twat. Why not shut your fucking trap, you obviously have no clue what I do. Stupid cunt.

While the rate of acculturation and experience of culture shock will vary with the individual, the four stages of culture shock would be transited in a matter of months, and a person should be sufficiently integrated in the society in six to twelve months at the latest. Probably the most negative stage of culture shock would be the hostility/frustration stage following the initial "honeymoon stage". This can be protracted in the case of ethnocentric and intransigent type people, easily recognised as they are constantly "moaning" about the people and country. This is probably a subset who fail to acculturate. I think the majority of expats living here are not in that category and the ones I know personally are fairly well acculturated.phnompenharrival wrote:You are all conflating my posts as only being about Cambodia. What the fuck are you guys talking about - acculturation, intransigent, ethnocentric?
I thought this was the thread where we talk about the price of bread and stuff? What gives?
I dont think anyone came here looking for a new hermeneutic or paradigm. That's the last thing they're looking for. Whats wrong with just comparing the price of eggs and moaning about it like the lardarse who started this thread intended?
