They may be packed but if the packees have been in there for hours nursing a drink then they not getting much revenue. Businesses suffer if they have high rents to meet thus making them unsustainable unless you have v high revenues - business 101 - I'd hazard a guess that they don't own all locations and will have high rents given where they are. I heard they suffering from a Khmer businessman who has his finger to the pulse in real estate and not just guesswork.

Flapping (and Frustrated) Pelican is wrong again. I don't drink, so I couldn't have had a beer.Starving Pelican wrote:Not necessarily. I've gladly bought others a drink of their choice, if I enjoyed their company. I don't drink for a variety of reasons.
Pathetic, Pelican, just pathetic ...

So when is Brown's PP shutting down, as I said?
Maybe they'll morph into something smaller.
Starbucks, Amazon, Exxon, Enron ...

Anyhoo. Starbucks all over the world are all full of freshies nursing a huge cup whilst tapping away on their Macbooks.
Seems to be a good business model to me.
pew, pew, pew, pew!

I'll say it again, first Starbucks, then Amazon, then Exxon, then Enron.
Any doubt to how this story ends?
You mean we all get plush jobs forever, people willingly help others and everyone is happy?
THIS is a disadvantaged country. Good intentions and all ...
Heard in a smoky backroom:
"I'm not flying there until they've got decent coffee. My whole staff runs on Arabica! How can we squeeze every rotten penny out of that g-forsaken country without good coffee?"
[ OK, I'm exaggerating for effect, but you do understand this is a sabay country, do you not? Adding coffee to an already opiated country ... Weird. ]
STRIKE POST: Let's get them all addicted to coffee. They need and deserve it. Forget ginger and all that green tea crap. Give them the black stuff ...
:p

That's what I've been arguing all along, they are not competing as they have different models. Brown's is a destination, Starbucks is a transitional space between point A and point B.
Starbucks has already proven globally which is the more profitable model. The Brown's model can and will still work in a country like Cambodia where labour costs are much lower, but time isn't on their side.
On a side note, a brilliant Starbucks trick is to make the tables knee height. This isn't comfortable, especially when working with a laptop for an extended period, then have single bar style seating around the sides which is much better positioned for a laptop. That stops one customer squatting on a latte for hours taking up a table that can house four.

The explanation is simple enough. Regulars entered, paid for their drinks then realized with a shock that should they linger, they'd run the risk of being accosted by Telesales eager to promote his latest time-share like venture.phat k wrote:Whats the secret to this? Same principle as the high tables for starbucks and uncomfortable sitting in fast food joints. Telesales sipping his water all day acted as a deterrent and increased turnover 200% by his mere presence. Brilliant business move by Jeff and/or Simon to let Telesales "work his magic".

That's not universal. I've been in dozens of Starbucks around the world where they have desk like tables, complete with punters sitting with their laptops for hours. My local Starbucks has large leather sofas, and I kill a couple of hours most weekend mornings with a book and 440.
Amazon Cafe is the largest coffee shop chain in Cambodia, "boasting more outlets than local brand Brown Coffee and Bakery." http://m.phnompenhpost.com/business/caf ... wth-course since that was written I can think of at least 4 or 5 more in my area that have opened or are opening.JimSocks wrote:i don't really like fast food coffee, doesn't even taste like coffee.
if i had to pick, i'd choose amazon. they at least give you a giant cup for your money. too bad amazon doesn't have too many locations.
A lot smaller, but Coffee Today are also aggressively expanding.

True, I have a formidable look, but if people don't JUDGE A BOOK BY HIS COVER than we'll usually end up talking about obscure 60s acoustic guitarists (whom I love) or current geopolitics or the latest B.S. going on around PP.
I'm quite congenial if you don't try to throw the race card into the mix.
And I don't talk business when I'm socializing, thanks.
I'm either like an Asian Shrek, or a loving Panda Bear, take your pick, haha.
