Anyone know where one might buy good quality sardines and WHOLE anchovies in bulk?
French, Portuguese, Spanish...
Marts around the Russian Market area have a variety of OK selections, varying by shop. But the supply is inconsistent.
And I'm sick of paying approx. 2.50 per can. I eat a can of anchovies or sardines per day so am looking for a supplier who can sell to me by the box.
I may as well be a dolphin I know.
Thanks!

I don't know anywhere you could source WHOLE anchovies in Phnom Penh, unless you mean sardines (anchovies are sardines after all).
Best current deal for me on anchovy fillets are the big cans in Thai Huot (but in sunflower oil).
Veggy's have marinated boquerones in the cold store.
Edit: I think you mean 'whole anchovy fillets' ?

Sardine is a generic term used to refer to small, silvery saltwater fish that are related to the herring and are found worldwide. Anchovy refers to a family of small fish found in the Mediterranean Sea, Black Sea and Atlantic and Pacific coasts.MaxB wrote:(anchovies are sardines after all)

Thanks for setting me right. I knew 'sardine' was a generic term but wrongly assumed anchovies were included.slavedog wrote:Sardine is a generic term used to refer to small, silvery saltwater fish that are related to the herring and are found worldwide. On the varieties Bayon have some Peruvian anchovies which are distinctly different from the Spanish or Portuguese version.
A year or so ago Thai Huot were selling larger cans of the Minerva brand very cheaply.
They are not cheap anywhere but I've seen small jars priced at a crazy $25 here in HCM (at Annam Gourmet). They do however have Gentleman's Relish, the poor man's prahok.
Thai hout also sell in bulk to restaurants if you know someone that owns a restaurant ask them to order you a box or 2

Whole Anchovies must be a marketing term then, for the smaller sized fish (usually higher end) whereas sardines are typically the pilchard-sized ones.
