sad, I've been coming to Cambodia for 7 yrs now and never made it to Snooky. Seems too late now. By the time I get there it will be all but taken over by the Chinese it seems. Is there no shore area nearby expats can regroup at? I had thought about Kampot but it would appear it's a hipster seaside imitation of SR. Kep, well all those lovely shells are owned I'm told, and when it gets swept up in modernizing, it'll be an upscale thang. With so little coastline big money is sure to lock it up. I'd like to stay close to the Thai border, is there any nice area to the north? With some trees? I'm real tired of rice paddies and palm trees.

I don't think Kampot is full of hipsters. It's full of unhealthy looking paranoid methheads.

Kampot town is nowhere near the sea-side.Gasser wrote: I had thought about Kampot but it would appear it's a hipster seaside imitation of SR.
That's already been going on for a long time.Kep, well all those lovely shells are owned I'm told, and when it gets swept up in modernizing, it'll be an upscale thang.
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.

Well, a ten minute drive to a secluded swimming spot isn't exactly far. Not a white sand beach obviously, but still... Too many white people and hipsters there though. It definitely has the highest expat to local ratio of any place in Cambodia, and sadly 80% came out of the same hipster moulding press. I suspect there's a hipster factory in Toul Toum Pong and they're churning them out and sending them down to Kampot to establish a stronghold from which they can regain the capital.

Hold on, I think Macau already is the Macau of the East!
Snookys, Shooters, Kangeroo, Bodega, Zig Zag all gone forever. Just Charlie Harpers left (Quiz on Tuesdays).
The Golden Island Casino just renamed to NEW MACAU this week

When Baconroll starts being negative about Shitsville you know the place has gone to hell in a bucket.

After all my years there I am even reconsidering living in SHV.scobienz wrote:When Baconroll starts being negative about Shitsville you know the place has gone to hell in a bucket.
Going to have a good look at Kampot in a few months time. Maybe buy some riverside land.
SHV in changing very fast and I am not sure I want to be part of the new SHV.
Note to self: Must be nice to morons.
We took the train to snooky this afternoon, as Fridays the only departure is at 3pm. It got there at 10:15, after what felt like the longest train ride in my life.
Even though I'd taken much longer journeys from Portugal to Austria in my students days and enjoy traveling by train in general, i wouldn't do this again. The seats were too straight and too narrow to allow any lasting comfort even if you get 2x2 seats to yourself. People ended up sitting on the floor to be more comfortable, despite the train being 2/3 empty . It stopped in Kampot after about 4 hours, which would have been just about tolerable.

Yeah, vladimir, it's about money, money, money. The tuk tuk drivers control the trains and make them go slow like third world shithole trains so they arrive at night when tuk tuk fares are slightly higher, even though the trains could go much faster like the Shinkansen if the train operators wanted.vladimir wrote:3pm and arrival after 10? I wonder which genius decided that schedule would be a good idea?
The tuk-tuk mafia?

The problem with Kampot,( I looked at land last summer on the river) is prices are very high YET those tourist that visit expect everything to be very cheap as after all its Cambodia, Just look at some prices in restaurants and gh's, they can barely make a profit.LaudJohn wrote:After all my years there I am even reconsidering living in SHV.scobienz wrote:When Baconroll starts being negative about Shitsville you know the place has gone to hell in a bucket.

Kep, although much less to do, seems to have a slight different clientele and pay alot more for lodging and food. But there as well, land is way overpriced and still no one seems to be redoing all the old abandoned villas (YET) and none seem to be for sale
NOW if u can wait for 20 years,go up and buy River front land on the Mekong above Steung Treng near the new casino being built,Land is still under $2/sq M
