now that we are somewhat settled in, i can finally devote some time to what's important. would love to hear your suggestions/opinions/etc..
mango martini - back when we visited briefly in 2013, i remember having one, or more likely a few, and they were absolutely delicious.. one of the best drinks that i've ever had, despite its simplicity. i've made a few rather feeble attempts to locate one, because i thoroughly forgot the location of where i had it, but so far to no avail (e.g. FCC served me a mango daiquiri, which wasn't bad, but i really don't need all that ice). any suggestions? or is mango simply out of season? i can wait if need to, or sub with some other fruit in the meantime, pineapples seem to be in season.
while on the alcohol subject, a quick one more - where would you buy bourbon here? not jim beam, if possible.
massage - so is it safe to assume that khmer massage parlors are decent institutions and they won't bother you with happy ending requests 45 minutes into your one hour session? happened in vietnam three out of three times.. regardless if your wife is in the next room. but here it's the opposite so far.. it's so opposite, it's like i'm afraid to embarrass myself by getting excited accidentally, since khmer massage is a rather sensual affair.
kettlebells - do they sell them in PP and if so where? i generally exercise minimally, swinging kettlebell around for a few minutes here and there is about what i can force myself to do on a somewhat regular basis. would love to pick one up.
thanks!
Mango Martinis, Massage, Kettlebells
Kettlebells - out on Monivong, North of Sihanouk Blvd. Bunch of stores.
awesome, thanks rgrowden!
oh, forgot one more question - has anybody been to Pyongyang restaurant? they have a show, i've read.. i feel like it's a must.. at least for an american fresh off the boat.. can't wait to send pictures back to the states.

Pyongyang has a schedule for shows, it's not an everyday thing. Ask them. Ask about pictures too...

Good job on supporting exotic flavors and staying in shape.
About massage, if it reads, "Traditional," usually you're OK. Look for slightly upscale parlors with tinkling fountains and scented candles, $8 an hour, no fondling, nice smells.
Being no supporter of dictatorship, it took me 8 years to step inside Pyongyang Resto. It's not bad, really, if you are purely non-government, as they are very pro-N. Korea (they really have no choice, it's become a survival trait for them).
Try to understand if you've got strong political views. Defiance is very very dangerous in their world. Even a lack of exuberant support casts suspicion on them. Let them live their charade, they kind of need to.
Nevertheless, the ladies themselves are fine, a real time capsule of authentic culture. Pretty gals, nice traditional outfits.
Definitely not your K-Pop deal, haha, the true opposite of K-Pop, but if you dislike crass commercialism and sex just for the sake of sales - an authentic and traditional Korean performance with a fine Korean dinner may be just for you.
Women are quite pretty in a conventionally Asian way, polite and deferring. Also talented and groomed to be conersatively attractive and polite.
However, if you've got a political bias, they may not like you so much, they can't. Think warring families of Romeo and Juliet, and you guys are Capulets.
Dishes start at $8, but faves are more likely $12, with specialties at $20 and up.
Don't know about the drinks, but I'm sure they have their own shoju. Don't know if they have makkuli rice wine.

Especially, don't remove any off the wall or anything.Ask about pictures too...
one mission accomplished -
hmm, i thought i followed instructions on how to post an image (of a 14kg kettlebell i just bought), but it's not coming through looks like.. oh well. it's fairly low grade, made in china by some AO JIAN.. expensive too, $3 per kilo.. great purchase in other words!
thanks for Pyongyang suggestions. sounds great! and i can handle dictatorship no problem. i was born and grew up in Soviet Union (before heading to the US right on the casp of perestroika).. i might have cried when Brezhnev died, don't remember exactly, was little, but it was a sad day, like your grandpa died or something. i may become a regular, especially if their bulgogi and kimchi and soju are good.

Food and drink guaranteed to be good.
BBQ as always great, I'm sure.
Show starts at 7pm.
You can be greeted by your fellow proletariat comrades. Not terrible people, just a terrible situation they are in.
There are a few reasons why N. Koreans are not free to travel the world.
1. They are a dirt poor nation, often starving with famine, reliant on aid,
2. The N. Korean government is paranoid, and created many enemies. So, NO free travel for N. Korean citizens.
So, asking a nice N. Korean gal to meet you outside after hours, to us, is flirtatious.
To them, it's inciting treason. Really.
They are often seen as eye candy teases for nostalgic S. Koreans, who like their traditional culture more than current K-Pop crap.
All-in-all, pretty much a once a unique experience, which may or may not last very long in the current political situation.
I hope the traditional Korean culture is somehow maintained, authentic and free of foreign influence.
To me, K-pop dancing is like watching an old Khmer fisherman dynamite fishing. Just not the same as the traditional way, and self a destructive as well.
And what's with K-pop's completely ignorant copying of ghetto ho's in the name of hip hop? Bumpin' and grindin', gyrating hips like a dime bag street ho.
What are they thinking? They don't even support ghetto life! You're supposed to be "gangsta" if you want to do that!
Sorry, rant over.
K-pop is cool if you like that, hot chicks are fine, but that ghetto vibe - no class girls. All @$$, no class.

Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
i don't think i can become Alexandra's forum pal, Violet, i am too flaky.. being a forum pal requires certain level of commitment, which i can't provide, i am afraid...
i once saw this female k-pop hip hop video, it was so over the top i kinda liked it. it's like they knowingly crossed the line between pop and irony and the video besides being just pop also became a parody of itself and the whole genre maybe and thus comedic.. here, i think it was this one -
not to be a devil's advocate, but in the current social and political climate across the globe i wouldn't bash north korea just like that. most likely the majority of people there are 'happy', as living in a nanny state has its advantages. high percentage of defectors to the south commit suicides, partially because it's too hard to deal with pressures of democratic capitalism. and at the opposite end of the spectrum, in the greatest democracy of all, you have huge swaths of free population so unhappy and clueless that they self-destructively keep electing certain officials into office... but it's only going to get worse for them, regardless of who they elect and how much freedom they have, as there will be less and less jobs in factories, farms, even offices.
can't wait for some cultural learnings at Pyongyang!
