went the other weekend, left with mixed feelings, here are pros and cons.
pros -
show is not bad.. mostly live, with a bit of lip syncing here and there.. and some overly fake smiles. great variety - rock band, traditional dance, kraftwerkian techno act, etc etc..
staff look pretty fabulous.. like model-grade good, most of them.. women i mean, there were almost no men working there.
food is good. kimchi was stellar i thought, fresh and crunchy, i'd go back for a takeaway if possible.. korean pancake and kimchi-tofu soup and bulgogi were also great.
cons -
expensive - mid to upper twenties for mains.. small plate of bulgogi is $25.. i guess you are paying for the show, but still.. however, if you want to go on a cheap, there are options - e.g. you can just get a k-cake which is huge and $10, and kimchi for $3, should be enough for 2-3 people.
not as many small tasty plates on the house as i expected (based on New York S.Korean restaurants experiences).
only one out of three mains we ordered arrived! not sure what it means.
dog meat on the menu - as a westerner, i'll put it in cons, but obviously it could be a draw for many.. in fact, if this fucking dog downstairs keeps barking at night, i may edit this soon enough.
can't take pictures/videos of the show.
overall, it felt more like just a regular Korean restaurant than something crazy and commie.. none of the symbols, no portraits of fearless leaders, no people in uniforms, no posters of Trump burning in capitalistic ballistic hell, etc.
now the biggest letdown for me was the abrupt end to the festivities. this whole concept i thought, or hoped, is modeled after big glamorous Russian restaurants, where you go in for the night - you have the cheesy show, you have music, both live and dj, you have mountains of food, vodka flows freely, you eat, drink, watch the show, drink, dance, eat more, drink, dance, drink, 4am, you stumble home.. here everybody left at 9, soon after the show ended.. i couldn't believe it! real shame, and a great business opportunity naturally missed by non-profit-seeking N.Koreans...

Yeah it's a good dinner and show, one of those girls can bang out a mean drum solo in 6" heels, but it's lights off and all chained up in their cell bunks by 9:30pm.

No expats have ever dated one of those waitresses? Are the waitresses ever seen out on the town, at Lucky Market, taking selfies at Brown Coffee, anything like that?

I remember a story on CNN about a nk waitress in Cambodia 'disappearing' on a date with a mysterious Chinese customer.

Sure the tv news report was a little different.

I'm not a negative person, I encourage people all the time...it's usually to f**k off! But, whatever.

I'm almost positive the staff is not allowed out of the restaurant. Their English is limited, as is their Khmer (a few speak ok Khmer as they've been here for years). They speak some Chinese though. The strangest thing is that they don't allow photos... and will make sure you don't take any. That is, unless you ask, then they ask permission from someone and will be allowed to get a photo with you.gavinmac wrote:No expats have ever dated one of those waitresses? The girls are very nice and very interested in where you're from, etc., even with the language barrier.
Food sucks; show is entertaining.

They are allowed out, but going out to meet random customers might be frowned upon.Miguelito wrote:

I think it's a fabulous place to bring visitors from abroad,
it's probably the only time they'll ever encounter the good folks of the DPRK.

Quite a charming restaurant with lovely staff, just a little bit too "left winged" ?
Btw, they are doing show after 9:30pm if you're in one of the room upstairs.
The waitresses are girls of many talents
Cons : everything goes to supreme leader (even tips )

I tried the spicy dog stew, apart form the desire to lick my own balls, scrape my ass across the floor & pee everywhere I never noticed any difference to a western restaurant?
I saw a group of the girls from Pyongyang Arirang restaurant at Aeon Mall once about two years ago, so they do get out and about, but I'd be willing to bet at least one of them is a minder for the govt of some sort, so getting a date might be tough.gavinmac wrote:No expats have ever dated one of those waitresses? We did the one here in Hanoi a few weeks ago.
Fuck it was horrible.
The girls were positively slutty with very short skirts and make up and they were quite flirty. This is in complete opposite to the PP staff.
The food was mediocre.
The long necks of NK beer ( which was very good ) were about $11 each.
NO SHOW. Despite there being a stage set up.
Apparently 2 out of the 3 NK restaurants in Hanoi have shut up in recent times as they get "boycotted" in the current climate.
Never again.
