I know most of you are anglos, but some understand food
Where is best onion soup in town?
I keep on tasting expensive bland stuff from my restaurants!

Armand's has always been known for theirs, albeit a tad pricey ($10 I think).CFSA wrote:I know most of you are anglos, but some understand food

Ten bucks for an effin' soup?! That's nearly as much as they charge for a can in the supermarkets. I was recently told that Blue Dolphin on St. 172 has some decent FO soup.

Armand's doesn't cater for the backpacker market...it's not as expensive as some other French restaurants in town, but the food is authentic and the soup is excellent!
Ten bucks is a bit pricy for soup when you consider that Bouchon do a very good Bavette d'agneau with Béarnaise Butter for $11. Not sure if they do an onion soup as I usually have their version of a Bouillabaisse which is liquidized, it's very good and served with rouille and croutons for $5The Window Licker wrote:Ten bucks for an effin' soup?! Let's face the facts here. The only things that should ever be aimed at backpackers anywhere are hostile remarks to encourage their moving out of the vicinity, blows with sticks to hasten the departure and, where possible, projectile weapons to bring a rapid end to the problem.Miguelito wrote:I think Bouchon's fish soup is excellent, in a perfect French style.
Yes Armand's onion soup isn't aimed at backpackers... neither did I think this thread was.
Olivier on St51 opp GSM has excellent Onion soup - a huge bowl with garlic croutons aplenty and that rubbery french cheese melted thru it - about $4 and filling
Cafe Lyon Bistro also has a great Onion soup for about $5 - but better is their fish soup with croutons, cheese, spicy garlic aoli and a hot 1/2 baguette
And I dont usually like soup

Khéma la Poste might win on price at $3.50 (obviously sending a message to Armand as their other soups are around $6)
but a small portion and easy to make better for a dollar.
In line with their other branches the venue is fairly comfortable but the dishes mostly poorly designed and presented. Faux-French, 'International' cuisine: pastas / burgers / coq au vin etc.
That said it will do well with tourists, business lunchers and the Khmer demi-riches.

Is that place still open? Last time I went there all his staff had walked out and he was doing everything. Not exactly inspiring. I like the place a lot though, it reminds me of Chez Gaston of years gone by, before all the riff-raff and US embassy personnel had heard about it. Come to think about it, before KIR posted about it here after going there with Logos.kgbagent wrote:Olivier on St51 opp GSM has excellent Onion soup - a huge bowl with garlic croutons aplenty and that rubbery french cheese melted thru it - about $4 and filling
