Greedy Pirate’s Feast - the Hidden Japanese Restaurant
Greedy Pirate’s Feast - the Hidden Japanese Restaurant
We went there last night. Had the whole place to the two of us. The review in PPP from a couple of months ago describers the place and the concept in detail: http://www.phnompenhpost.com/food-drink ... me-cooking
The food was nothing short of amazing. It is hard to find better value for money in this town. If you are looking for Sushi or Ramen go somewhere else. What you will be served is a great mix of classic Japanese dishes featuring a variety of western ingredients merged with Japanese flavors (e.g. Japanese style Mozzarella). If you stick to beer you will end up paying way less than 100 USD for two persons. If you want to try some international and Japanese spirits and add a bottle of wine you will still be below 150 USD. Expensive but well worth it for having the whole place to yourself for the full evening.
Excellent service and atmosphere as well. Ask around for the contact details. There is plenty of people who have been there and who will be happy to give you their number/mail.

I can pay 20 people to go get the fish out of river, cook it, roll it, serve it with saki and wait on me for less than that.
And Sofitel has really good value for the money (better than that) for great Japanese food.

I’ve been to Sofitel’s Japanese restaurant, and “value for money” does not come to mind.
I’ve also been to Greedy Pirate’s Feast - we were 6 people and had the place to ourselves. It was a wonderful meal and I’m glad to hear he’s still here (he mentioned moving to Holland I think). Our group especially appreciated the free cigars he offered after the meal. It’s a very good meal for $35. I still have our menu at home, and will take a pic and share it tonight.
aem, I’m glad it didn’t disappoint! Next up, Le Broken Plate?

The chef used to post on here, if it's the place I'm thinking of.

$150?? Wow. For $150 you could get 50 meals at a midrange restaurant.aem wrote:If you want to try some international and Japanese spirits and add a bottle of wine you will still be below 150 USD.
I hope you tipped at least a dollar if the service was OK.

oh really? I think I also could get around 150 portions of fried noodles for it (which I love) for this money. but one some special occasions I like to go to special places.gavinmac wrote:$150?? Wow. We didn't pay that much but wine is expensive here and depending on what people like to drink you could easily end up with a bill that "high" (remember it was for two persons). I do not find the price to be extraordinary high though. I mean they open the whole place up just for you and serve you a dozen very unique dishes for 35 USD a person. there is no other guests the whole night. a good peace of meat in one of the many French Restaurants around town also sets you back 20-30 dollars alone.
the whole thing is rather simple: Either you are into food a lot and enjoy going to expensive restaurants from time to time or you don't and you spend your money on whatever the hell you like.
Cambodian beers where 2.50 I think so 5 times the street price but still less expensive than in Ballsac Lane. So if you are curious and want to not end up paying too much, have some beers and you end up spending less than 50 bucks per person.
Le Broken Plate has been on my radar for a long time...and I have just not made it there yet. Looks like this place also warrants an evening out.
What happened to Gavinmac? When did he turn into a Cheap Charlie?gavinmac wrote:$150?? Wow. For $150 you could get 50 meals at a midrange restaurant.aem wrote:If you want to try some international and Japanese spirits and add a bottle of wine you will still be below 150 USD.

The name of the restaurant is a bit problematic, In Mandarin Chinese, WoKou (倭寇,) which means 'dwarf pirate' in English, is a widely used anti-Japanese ethnic slur. The slur has ancient origins. As far back as the Han times, Chinese referred to the Japanese as 倭 or dwarf. Han scholars referred to Japan as 倭奴国 or "dwarf slave country."
Many will remember in 2008 during the East Asian Cup when Chinese protestors used this ugly slur to disparage Japanese fans. They also booed when the Japanese anthem was played.
