Le Broken Plate - A Review
I posted a front page article about Le Broken Plate.
The atmosphere is excellent, the food pretty good (but not as amazing as a trip to, say, Sushi Lab), and the prices certainly very reasonable.
I would highly recommend trying it out for something a little different, or to become a go-to date spot.

Le Broken Plate has a new location, so I gave it a try last night.
You can read about it on the Front Page here: http://www.khmer440.com/k/2018/10/le-br ... -location/
Spoiler Alert: Last year I recommended it; this year, new location, I do not.

No flipping or flopping. They have moved to a new, much larger location. I went and checked it out, and they're not able to provide the same level of service or atmosphere as before. I much preferred the old location; hopefully he'll be able to get the new place up and running to the same standard, but he's not there yet.Playboy wrote:^ Flip Flop Yankee !

Thanks for the review. Sounds like it's quickly outgrown it's own charm with the expansion...
You really should lay off that raw salmon though... Most, if not all of the shit I see here is parasitic. It is super low quality pen farmed, Norwegian throwaway shit and isn't good, especially raw.

The salmon is really tricky for me, as I really do love salmon tartare or smoked/cured salmons. I do flip flop on the farmed salmon thing, as it seems that strong arguments can be made for and against. It's certainly a topic I need to become better versed in.kansaicanuck wrote:Thanks for the review. Sounds like it's quickly outgrown it's own charm with the expansion...

Turning Tastebuds at the Salmon House
The largest importer of fresh salmon in the country has the primarily Atlantic salmon delivered to the door of his restaurant the Salmon House every day.
If you eat salmon in Phnom Penh it probably has been imported fresh and checked by Vutha and his staff in his kitchen shortly after arriving by plane from sustainable ocean farms in Norway.
Aeon Mall and Lucky Supermarket stock his fish and the fish reaches Phnom Penh’s other restaurants through distributors..........
The market’s expansion has meant that Vutha has been able to accordion the market and import Tasmanian salmon and wild salmon from Scotland.
Unlike Tasmania or Norway, Scotland can export wild salmon, which is more expensive. https://wheninphnompenh.com/turning-tas ... mon-house/
And here's the bad news re farmed salmon:
How Dangerous Is Farmed Salmon?
The reason for the higher contaminant levels in farmed salmon is due to the feed given to them – a fish meal composed of ground fish and fish oil from only a few species of ocean fish. These species accumulate the toxins in run-offs from agriculture and industry that wind up in oceans. With a limited variety of fish to eat, farmed salmon are exposed to higher concentrations of contaminants than wild salmon, which eat a more varied diet. Researchers say it would be possible to develop oil-rich feed for farmed salmon that was free of toxic contaminants.https://www.drweil.com/diet-nutrition/f ... ed-salmon/

one of the only real benefits that people talk about with farmed salmon is that they do contain higher Omega fatty acids. Problem is that's because the fish have a much higher fat content than wild or real salmon along with the omegas most of the toxins and other bad shit is also stuck within the fat as well.
One of their biggest problems is they absolutely decimate wild stocks because wild stocks cannot fight off their foreign parasites/disease. When they escape out of the pens they end up destroying causing major havoc for the wild ecosystem.
They also have to feed the fish a
synthetic version of astaxanthin which changes the natural gray or off-white color of farmed fish flesh to this weird orange color to make it look like salmon.
As Mao Den posted... Aeon and Lucky get the same salmon that the restaurants get here. With many of them serving raw salmon which looks like this photograph I took of salmon at Aeon. Black and purple blotches, discolored, stinking mess mmm yum.
The photograph below is of what salmon should look like... Wild salmon looks like this. I took these last year back home at a little corner sushi joint I like to go to when I'm back.
Sister in-law here in PP sent me this next pic a few weeks ago from. Somewhere in BKK maybe? "Hey bro, how's this salmon look?!"
I obvioualy replied " hommie don't play that shit sis"
