Using creditcards in Cambodia
I've only been using cash myself here so far, $10 bills to be exact.
But thinking about using a card, at places like Aeon, Grab and other places where the card isn't out of my view.
Just wondering if anyone here has experience with that, at all? Is it safe to use?

My local CC gives me 1% back and we are using it more and more where it doesn’t cost more to do so.

We are using MC and VC since 2007, firstly for our travels outside Cambodia and more and more locally. Never had a problem. Generally Invoices over $ 50 we pay with Credit Cards, below its cash. Never had a problem.

Alright, thanks. I will proceed with caution as I was ripped off myself in Thailand in 2008. $2500 went to some phone operator in Malaysia. I am still trying to figure out who did it. Could have been in Chanthaburi, that was one questionable place in general. And because I have a German name and a slight accent, the American bank official was questioning my honesty. So would want to be sure not to make that happen again.

We use a MC and prior to that VISA. Have had no problems. Use it at Western oriented supermarkets, hotels, hospitals, Western oriented restaurants, and for airfare.
The one thing to pay attention to is checking your monthly statement for double billing. Most of the merchants seem to route the charges through a bank and sometimes the charges go through twice. Its happened 4 times in about 4 years. Bit of a pain to get it corrected but has been reversed each time that I've opened a claim with the CC company.
Just keep in mind that you want to get a CC that doesn't charge foreign transaction fees.

Get a Debit Card.

It's the job of bank officials to question the legitimacy of an account holder's claim that he didn't authorize charges. I doubt this had anything to do with your German name or slight accent.

Sure, I couldn't claim that in Court. But it took her quite a while to understand, that I was never in Malaysia during that time, and that all other charges were from hotels and car rental co. in Thailand.
I actually do have a debitcard with Paypal business that works fine here, although with some hefty fees using the ATM. But I haven't gotten the guts to use it anywhere else yet. I am gonna give it a try soon though. Aeon it is. Hopefully using it as a charge card will not incur added fees here.

Why don't you open a local bank account and get a debit card (I assume you are living here?), save you paying fees for using overseas cards.

Yeah, I understand that would be a good idea.
I guess the best way to transfer from PayPal, is to hook up the card with Moneygram.
That's only a $12 transaction fee.
Paypal is convenient but expensive. With a 2.5% transaction fee, and lousy exchange rates,
probably a real bad deal to use here,

MoneyGram????
There is no reason to be paying MoneyGram nor paypal. They are for emergency type situations. Like you have a relative travelling in the south of Italy and has their wallet stolen and they have no cash and no credit cards. Otherwise its just burning money. Paypal is one of the worst methods of sending money internationally as they hit you coming and going (fees and exchange rates).
Don't know what country your from, but its not difficult getting a "no foreign transaction fee" credit card in the US. You might also want to look into credit unions for a savings account/ATM card. The one I use allows up to $20 per month of ATM fee reimbursement. ANZ charges $5 and they have a maximum withdrawal of $400 (including the fee I believe). So that allows me to withdraw $390 up to 4 times a month if needed. We also use ACLEDA and do a once yearly wire transfer so we have a savings account/ATM here. I believe that ACLEDA charges $5 for the card (one time fee) and ATM withdrawals up to $1000 are free. You can also use the card as a debit card at many supermarkets and restaurants BUT there is a 50 cent fee for each transaction.
Think you'll find its worth a few hour of your time to investigate the options. Good luck.

Yeah, that sounds like the best way, if you belong to the property owners, with voting rights and all that. I am just a humble 1,71 freelance digital nomad with limited and varying monthly funds,, so hard for me to make other than immediate plans atm.
But thanks for the info.
Cheers

CASH only is my Motto now. Either the travel agency or Cebu Pacific Airlines ripped me off for $250. I get $ from my Direct Express Debit Card from the U.S social security and withdraw $ from ATM machines at Banks when they are Open only. I have No credit cards and No saftey net to catch me if I fall...mo better safe than sorry.
For me:
Debit card: Use at ATMs only.
Credit card: Online at reputable websites - Amazon, etc. (offers more protection) & top end restaurants (Topaz, etc) or supermarkets.
Prepaid card: Online at dodgy websites - LordPlayboy.com, etc. (can only lose what you put on it).
My biggest gripe currently is that I have a chip & PIN Visa credit card from ANZR, and it never works on Acleda POS terminals - it works on Maybank, PiPay POS terminals just fine. If you're in this boat on an ANZR credit card/Acleda POS combo anywhere, ask the retailer to click the "Enter" button and sign instead. Second to that, retailers still asking for a signature even though you just put in your PIN ... they'll get there eventually!
