A couple of years ago and shortly after arriving I popped into a 'new bar' on the riverside. 'Don't you think this place is a little bit different?' said the owner. No it fucking well isn't, I thought. Same cheap rattan everywhere, the same tawdry paintings on the wall as everywhere and the overiding ambience of a dentists waiting room. Suffice to say the owner ran out of money after a year, the bar went down the toilet and now I can't even remember it's name.
The Pickled Parrot however, really is a bit different. This new bar had it's opening night last night and has wisely chosen to place itself on what is now emerging as Phnom Penh's street of classy male orientated bars next to the Rose Bar and accross the street from Zanzibar.
It's very obvious that some serious money has gone into this venture and the bar is bright, airy and very like a classy bar might look at home. Plus they have killer aircon, drop down screen for the footie, possibly the best pool table in town and some very swanky bathrooms indeed. The small (but perfectly formed) 440 posse that descended on opening night were impressed.
