Great thread this. I'm not sure if it qualifies as Colonial, but I love the old Ministry of Education Building on Norodhom, especially lit up at night. Sorry but I can't find a picture of it at the moment.
There is another gorgeous old building just off Norodom in the same area but on the other side of the road. Not sure of it's name, but when I walked past it recently it seemed to be some kind of 'special' university. It's on a corner block.

Also in the post office area is the old Grand Hotel built in 1896. Currently the front is defaced by KFC but the building houses Chez Rina one of the few bars/lounges in a restored colonial room with original floor and wall decorations from the 1890s. The hotel was extended in 1910 to the post office square but in a completely different style. Unfortunately the bedroom floor of the hotel which is also leased to KFC was gutted and rebuilt as a KTV - now it is vacant and unused. It does have a rather good wooden staircase but not much else of value.

Brownie points to whoever can identify the location of this one:
Sorry about the quality. My phone camera has been geting worse and worse lately... Plus it's never been good in backlit situations.
Here's the old alleyway which many of you might recognize, where there used to be Chinese theater/plays:

Reminds me of some in Kampong Cham. Very pleasant little downtown to walk around in half an hour.
That is one of the rarely mentioned joys of Cambodia, walking around the smaller towns (still large by Cambodian standards) with their colonial remnants. Thailand unfortunately had a building boom between the 70's and 90's that wiped out much of the older stuff so, outside of Chiang Mai, their town centers are pretty dull by comparison.

One near the beach on Koh Dak the other day:
And one on Chruoy Changva a few years ago, not sure if it's still there:

That one on Koh Dak is nice, I have never seen it. The Chroy changvar one is still there, they had a go at replastering it so it has changed color but it's pretty well as it was.
There is a nice one on the river road from Takamao through to 21 in Sa Ang, until a couple of years ago it was riddled with bullet holes. Looked like it fought a duel with a riverboat, it's now been restored.
About 25ks down 21 in Sa Ang there are two, one of each side of the Bassac.
I used to think these houses were French colonialists shacks but now I know they are Chinese.
Kompong Cham and Kratie have lovely timber houses, that one that is a restaurant in Kratie is a beauty. I believe that the islands up there have some crackers as well. The masonry building that became a small boutique hotel just south of Kratie, it was a timber port I forget the name, that is a beauty.
And the old timber houses on the river in Battambang are nice.
When I return I might traverse the country and photograph and document all the old places outside Phnom Penh. I am tempted to buy up the nicest old houses and relocate them to Kampot, snowies house found a nice home there.
I also like the simple square timber house at the primary school just south of the Takeo Kampot border. It's got the split bamboo floors and it is in good Nick apart from the white ants in the columns at ground level. Can you buy treated pine poles in Thailand?

The town south of Kratie is Chlong. Apparently that building was a KR prison in the late 70s so none of the locals wanted to go near the place. Always thought it was a weird place to set up a hotel, that town is tumbleweed central. Maybe they get some of the upmarket Mekong cruises stopping by?

That's it LL, it's a lovely building in the rong place. I think it was a timber merchants house. The hotel changed hands a few times, it might be defunct by now.

Unfortunately, what was left of the hotel is now disfigured and has a very huge ugly blue SAMSUNG sign on it and on the ground floor cambodia phone shop #12304901394213 will open soon.jm wrote: I think you mean International Hotel
Why would I care? I'm Khmer
I wonder about that International Hotel. Who owned it? Are there any photos of it when it was in its prime? What happened to the owners? Sure would be interesting to know the history of it.

There are plenty of pictures of the street (La Rue Ohier) from way back that you can see the hotel in. Apparently it was built around 1910.Frank4 wrote:I wonder about that International Hotel. A well known resident asked about renting this building recently. The owners wanted $1500 per month, as is.
