True Tales of Days Gone By ~ UNTAC recollections
I haven't seen "contrarians," OML, and I didn't read any posters minimizing or demeaning the emotional, physical and psychological impact that victims of mines have suffered and are enduring.
There is just a parallel discussion to trace the fabrication of killing devices to countries that, maybe, should take responsibility in the damages weapons of war have caused. People have different interests and that's why it's a discussion thread. Just remember to keep it civil, folks.

Then we are reading this very differently.
So be it.
And civility has been maintained even if diametrically opposed views expressed.

I will have to get around to posting a few of my minefield stories...after the bile in my throat clears.
I'm with you, OML.

Thank you Felgerkarb.
Some things are best left in the distant recesses of memory.
If never experienced then never understood.
I just got back from Cambodia but will be back in April-May for ANZAC Day and KNY in Kratie.
It would be nice if both of us could meet up for a quiet drink.

I certainly didn't mean to offend or belittle land mine victims or victims families or anyone who had the misfortune to witness first-hand what those things can do. It was just an observation from my extremely limited knowledge of land mine clearance, part of which was gained through a family member involved in Eastern Europe issues. That's all.
I hope it doesn't detract from the informative posts from you, felgster and all the other posters.

I didn't mean to derail the thread, someone else brought up the British mines topic.
Anyway, none of this is particularly related to UNTAC so I'll stop posting about it.on this thread.
I know it's off topic too, but I'm really wondering how the hell you get rid of a ton or so of rotting elephant from a minefield. That's pretty far out.

Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.

The title of this thread is...True Tales of Days Gone By - UNTAC
Please note the word/acronym...UNTAC
And as I posted at the time...
I don't suppose that elephant cared one iota where those damned mines came from. Poor bastard.
...But that's another story for another time/place...
The problem is, and to give YTP and others a space for themselves, is the lack of similar True Tales of Days Gone By to cater for such topics as:
- Second Indochina War - True Personal Tales Recollections
- Bar Stool War Stories
- Military/Political Aspects - Facts and Fanciful
- Cambodia ERW (Explosive Remnants of War) Topics - This should keep YTP busy for years!
And probably quite a few more along similar lines
The trouble is that for lack of suitable topics and a lack of posting discipline - UNTAC - is acting as a proxy forum for far more than it set out to be or is intended to be or suitable to be.
Just personal thoughts.

I agree. My UNTAC service and landmine experiences are a little intertwined though. I lived in the middle of the K5 Plan at the end of the UNTAC line. So what was a "BK tramautic amputation from a Type 72 or PMN" would translate into a person on the margins of a marginal society just lost their shot to walk away from this hell. They don't bleed as fast as you'd think. The veins and arteries kinda retract into the remaining part. We had to help them get through the lines to the ICRC hosppital in Mongkol Borei where the doctors could shave their bones and make a meaty stump. You need a good stump to fit a prosthesis. It takes months and somebody would have to take care of them. The faction I was with pocketed everything and left their men to their own devices. We didn't talk a lot about how we felt.
Ot Mean Loi, hope you don't mind me making a comment about your few posts on the 26 th last month, on the subject of where mines came from, and the couple nonsense posts disagreeing with you view that it doesn't really matter, quote, to hell with statatisticiansn,NGO's, Historians and other like organisations. This is slightly off topic, also, but I arrived in Nui Dat Oct'69, posted as an FE with 3 troop 1 Fld Sqn, a national serviceman, but who cares, anyway over the next 12 months I had quite a bit to do with mines but never once did I, or anyone else there care about the origin of the awful killing and maiming device, the M16 which of course came from the good old USA. As you would know mine incidents were so relevant around those times thanks to that disastrous decision of the barrier minefield from the Horseshoe to Dat Do. Anyway, as someone who unfortunately still has bad memories of them, I'm with squarely with you on this one, as I really don't think these treaties, bits of papers, or shaming countries as was suggested achieves anything.
But to the current situation at least here in Cambodia, I've had a little bit to do with the supply of equipment, training etc with a small demining organisation based out of Siem Reap. I'll be back up in Siem Reap, Phnom Penh at present, in a week or two and at first opportunity I'll ask Aki Ra what sort of records he's kept and pretty sure all I'll get in reply is that infectious grin and "what mean". I don't know what Halo or MAG do we blow every device in the ground, so much for the origin, who cares, although I believe the Chinese made M72 was pretty prevalent In some area's. Just as a matter of interest, when I get around to it I'll check with some contacts to see what sort of, if any, records CMAC keeps on this subject.
Bit long winded, but to be expected from someone who first came here 14 years ago, read this forum for what must be a decade, and only registered and first post today.

Hello Holdfast - a good name for a Gingerbeer by the way.
You and I were in 1 ATF Nui Dat at the same time. Or at least we overlapped slightly.
Although I was almost on my way to Cam Ranh Bay by the time you arrived and about to get involved in Operation Commando Vault preparing the LZs for the "Incursion" in to Cambodia in the Parrot's beak/Kien Svay area at the time you arrived.
I'm back in KH for the second time this year again in time for Khmer New Year and ANZAC Day.
Probably see you on ANZAC Day then.
