Returning to the initial query, I still don't believe Khmer were paying $0.12 a bullet in 2001. That's $3.60 an AK47 clip when they retail for about $5-10 for AK variants in the USA right now.Lucky Lucan wrote:Here's the Riel-US$ exchange rate from 1994 till about 2008. As you can see it's just above 2500 in 1995 and has hit close to 4000 by 1998.

Good point. I didn't know that.Lucky Lucan wrote:Sure, but in the book he's referring to his visit in 1989 when he made Danger on the Edge of Town.doktor_d wrote:In "Derailed in uncle Ho's garden" from 1995 (p.135 ), Tim Page wrote :

There was a whole lot of inflation in the early 90's.

How is the price of a bullet in an open market economy in any way related to what we have here in Cambodia?loy division wrote: Returning to the initial query, I still don't believe Khmer were paying $0.12 a bullet in 2001. Anyway, just to get back on track these are from the link I gave on page 1.

$8 for a wooden stock ak in 93. Magazines rusted and cost more than the rifle sometimes. By 97 we had a dozen mixed weapons: k59, k54, m79s, grenades ... I'm not even into guns. It's better now.

Knew a bloke, local, who said he and his chums used to go out as youths in one of their dad's cars with a trunk full of weapons back in late 80's. They'd go a few km out of town and shoot them off in the sticks. When I was a lad.we only had a.few real sticks to.pretend they were guns.exray wrote:$8 for a wooden stock ak in 93. Interesting. And with poverty so rampant in Cambodia, I suspect there was no shortage of people lining up to turn in guns, ostensibly for some sort of pay off. What a shame people didn't realize that voluntarily disarming only makes it easier for an oppressive government to run them down. I'm a bit shocked to see such a mentality in a country that so recently experienced major atrocities.TristranandIsolde wrote:The story goes:.
It wasn't until "Tomb Raider" (2001) with Lara Croft and her shorts (played by Cambodia's Godmother and Honorary Citiizen and UN Peace Ambassador, Angelina Jolie) that the travel agents noticed Angkor Wat and recognized the marquis value of such an enormous site.
So, the world travel agents told the military, "We'll make you rich, but you gotta get rid of all the guns."
In 2003-2005 most of the guns were bought, destroyed, seized, confiscated, etc.
In 2008, everybody and their brother showed up with a suitcase of cash, and it's been "Parking Lot City" ever since.
The fairy tell ending ends up with a fat family and total gridlock, but no more war.
So the story goes ...
If you wanna live life on your own terms, you gotta be willing to crash and burn."
