Where did all the guns go?
In 1979, two invasions occurred; the Soviets invaded Afghanistan and the Vietnamese invaded Cambodia. Both wars struggled on until the conclusion of the Cold War and then were inherited by states formed as a result of the invasions. However, the Khmer Rouge were formally defeated in 1998 and the Taliban went on to, you know the rest. Now, 38 years on, Afghanistan is a failed state where everyone and their goat has a Kalashnikov or something larger and louder, but Cambodia is a functional South East Asian state in which its fairly rare to see anything of a large caliber in public hands. Where the hell did they all go?

The EU led small arms/ light weapons reduction program in the late 90s/ early 2000s played its part.

Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
Those gun amnesties woulds have had a limited effect after what the country had just gone/was going through. Vigilante groups were being advised by government officials to - please take a policeman with you when you go on your rounds in 2006. The provincial police were paid $5 p m and a sack of rice. The provinces were still places, up till I would say, the middle of the 00's, where vengeance grenade attack or robbery by gun (AK normally) were fairly commonplace.
What happened to the weapons that weren't handed in? I suspect most were buried or hidden just in case what happened here before happens again, and when it wasn't so necessary to have one handy at home in case of intrusion. At least, that's what I would have done with my one.
I was told a story about a situation that had arisen in the Boeng Kak area 3 or so years ago. Apparently nearly every family in the side street in question had a pistol ready waiting for any trouble.

My posts are just jokes, maybe they're rude, offensive, and politically incorrect. They're not my opinion, viewpoint, idea, or judgement, but they're just fucking jokes so lighten up.

The story goes:.
It wasn't until "Tomb Raider" (2001) with Lara Croft and her shorts (played by Cambodia's Godmother and Honorary Citiizen and UN Peace Ambassador, Angelina Jolie) that the travel agents noticed Angkor Wat and recognized the marquis value of such an enormous site.
So, the world travel agents told the military, "We'll make you rich, but you gotta get rid of all the guns."
In 2003-2005 most of the guns were bought, destroyed, seized, confiscated, etc.
In 2008, everybody and their brother showed up with a suitcase of cash, and it's been "Parking Lot City" ever since.
The fairy tell ending ends up with a fat family and total gridlock, but no more war.
So the story goes ...

Collected and sold to the Tamil Tigers during their war. Cambodia was a giant supplier of black market stuff during the end of that conflict. When the government ordered an inventory of military stocks in the early to mid 2000s (I forget exactly when, it was in the papers) at the various depots, the largest depot outside Battambang mysteriously exploded, "destroying" said stocks.

How widespread would you say they were in 2005? Were they mainly in the hands of military/ ex military/ police, or had a lot been bought up by private individuals wishing to protect their property?Felgerkarb wrote:Collected and sold to the Tamil Tigers during their war. Military/police/ex or otherwise. The "authorities".
