I'm doing a little research on Koh Pich, and would like to know more about the land before development. I know it was farmland and a little about what happened to the squatters/farmers before the builders came in, but any photos, links or info would deserve a pint.
Lucky Lucan, I'm especially keen to hear from you, as I know your library is full of PP history.
Thanks.

There was an article (in the post?) a few years ago about the background. Apparently it was underwater part of the year for a long time, and it was only in the past 30 years or so that it silted up enough to become more permanent. I'd guess that it's formation had a lot to do with the reclamation of the Tonle Bassac area east of Sothearous.

Some great aerial shots from 2005, 2009:
Edit. I believe shot by the same Joe Garrison of the fundraiser gig at Sharky's this evening?

http://www.phnompenhpost.com/national/k ... ream-greedFifty years ago, Koh Pich didn't exist. Even today, some maps of Phnom Penh don't show the 68-hectare island located in front of the Naga Casino complex, where the Tonle Bassac meets the Mekong River.

I've got close friends who lived in the slum area near Koh Pich which I think is where the Sofitel hotel is now.
I'm sure they'd be happy to have a chat. PM me if you're interested in following up.

I posted these before, they are Google Earth screen-grabs comparing 2003 and 2015.
Tonle Bassac area with Koh Pich still all farmland.
Close-ups where you can still see the vast slums and the Bassac Theater. There was a karaoke shack where the Australian Embassy is now, used to be good fun down there, the slums opposite were a bit sketchy at night, loads of kids sniffing glue in the alleyways etc.
After Koh Pich was evicted they walled off the nearby quay and the island and put up guard towers, to prevent anyone returning. It was difficult to see what was going on for a few years but the whole island was shored up/ back-filled with sand first.
