River Road to China
Anyone read this book by Milton Osbourne? LL? Quite interesting so far and I always enjoy these types of adventure books, but wondering about its accuracy.

No, I've read Milton Osborne's "The Mekong: Turbulent Past, Uncertain Future" but not that one.
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.

I have both books - River Road to China and Mekong - Turbulent Past Uncertain Future.
There is quite a lot of common material to be found in either book. River Road to China is the earlier publication and has a number of good illustrations not found in the later book. All of Milton's observations and predictions about the Mekong have certainly come to pass.

What would your recommendations be for a book on this theme - one of these two, or something else? I prefer reading something up-to-date. Thanks!Ot Mean Loi wrote:I have both books - River Road to China and Mekong - Turbulent Past Uncertain Future.

Hello amirite
Actually, both books are "stand alone" reads and different in purpose and direction, even though, not surprisingly, there is some common content.
You really need to read both books if serious about understanding the history of Mekong exploration and the geopolitical reasons behind French attempts to do so. The second book deals more with what was, at the time of writing, the looming "train smash" that has come to effect the Mekong and the millions who live in the lower region of the Greater Mekong Sub-Region (GMS). Everything that Milton foretold has come to pass, and more.
I've had the privilege of traveling the GMS with Milton and sampling some of the surviving wine bars known to him along the way.
Unfortunately, as is so often the case with such organizations, the MRC, Mekong River Commission, lacks real teeth. Worse still, the major offender and destroyer of the Mekong, China, has refused to become a member nation of the MRC and doggedly retains only "Observer" status.
