I just saw this post from Cleveland.com’s Facebook page:
On May 4, 1970 the Ohio National Guard fired into a crowd of Kent State students who were protesting the bombing of Cambodia by U.S. military forces. 4 students were killed and 9 injured. This image is one of the most iconic photos of the incident.
John Paul Filo picture's of 14-year-old runaway Mary Ann Vecchio screaming while kneeling over the dead body of 20-year-old Jeffrey Miller, one of the victims of the Kent State shooting, won him the Pulitzer Prize in 1970. Filo was a photojournalism student at Kent during the shooting and was in the photography lab when the shots rang out. He grabbed his equipment and ran outside.

Time has it as one of their 100 most influential photographs:
http://100photos.time.com/photos/john-p ... -shootingsThe shooting at Kent State University in Ohio lasted 13 seconds. When it was over, four students were dead, nine were wounded, and the innocence of a generation was shattered. The demonstrators were part of a national wave of student discontent spurred by the new presence of U.S. troops in Cambodia. At the Kent State Commons, protesters assumed that the National Guard troops that had been called to contain the crowds were firing blanks. But when the shooting stopped and students lay dead, it seemed that the war in Southeast Asia had come home. John Filo, a student and part-time news photographer, distilled that feeling into a single image when he captured Mary Ann Vecchio crying out and kneeling over a fatally wounded Jeffrey Miller. Filo’s photograph was put out on the AP wire and printed on the front page of the New York Times. It went on to win the Pulitzer Prize and has since become the visual symbol of a hopeful nation’s lost youth. As Neil Young wrote in the song “Ohio,” inspired by a LIFE story featuring Filo’s images, “Tin soldiers and Nixon coming/ We’re finally on our own/ This summer I hear the drumming/ Four dead in Ohio.”

being a teenager in the states in the 60's was an amazing time to be alive, for sure
We used to have a regular poster here who grew up during that time. His name was Richard or something like that. He would constantly moan about everything. You know how old people can be sometimes. It's a shame he's no longer here to tell us what it was like. He's probably got some cool photos too.over the rainbow wrote:

Then proceed to tell us why he thinks Thailand is better than Cambodia and go on for a few sentences about some of the trips he took to Myanmar. Kent State is back in the news. A recent graduate showed up on campus for photos with an AR10 to protest that guests can open carry weapons, but students cannot. She referenced the above incident, posting on Twitter: “Now that I graduated from @KentState, I can finally arm myself on campus. I should have been able to do so as a student- especially since 4 unarmed students were shot and killed by the government on this campus. #CampusCarryNow.”

If only those students had been better-armed on May 4th they would have been able to take on the National Guard. Goddamn Feds etc....
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
