On April 17, 1975, the Khmer Rouge began the forced relocation of people from Phnom Penh and other urban areas.
Khmer people living under the blood and tears of the ultra-Marxist regime suffered terribly, and millions of Cambodians died of hunger, torture, overwork, lack of medicine and treatment, and internal cleansing.

44 Years Since Evacuation of Cambodian Cities
Bringing the news. You stay classy, nas, Cambodia.
Cambodia doesn't commemorate this significant date, supposedly they don't feel it to be important or maybe it's a day to forget?Bong Burgundy wrote: ↑Wed Apr 17, 2019 4:20 pmToday marks the 44th anniversary (17 April 1975-17 April 2019) of the start of the genocidal regime of Democratic Kampuchea “the Khmer Rouge.”

It was celebrated as Liberation Day right up till about 1986.

Had thought January 7th was Liberation Day. Maybe there used to be 2 Liberation Days?Lucky Lucan wrote: ↑Thu Apr 18, 2019 3:12 pmIt was celebrated as Liberation Day right up till about 1986.

It might have been "Victory over imperialism day" or something similar.

The CNRP wanted to commemorate the day some years ago but got a red light from Cyclops.
When you say it was celebrated up until 1985, ('Liberation Day/Victory over the Imperialists'), were you suggesting that remnants of the KR would celebrate it?
There really doesn't seem to be any kind of recognition for the date on the national level.

It was a national holiday for the first few years of the PRK.

I can't find what the holiday was called, but I maybe wouldn't want to focus on it too much if I were Cambodian as it falls at Khmer New Year.
Never really thought about that before.

I'm not sure how accurate this is as it was my understanding that the celebration of that day wasn't so much a thing by the late 80s.

Until the UN-brokered peace accords of 1991, April 17th was considered a national day of celebration, which marked the victory of the Cambodian people over Lon Nol’s US-backed forces and imperialism.
