Thailand a year after the coup
Thailand a year after the coup
The Army took control of Thailand a year ago today. Is Thailand a better place today than before? I'm in Bangkok now and most people I speak to seem quite content with things. Yes, there are frustrations with political restrictions but must ordinary people seem to have gotten tired of the consistent strife of the last few years.
There seems to be a perception that police corruption has been curtailed too
So, a good thing or a bad thing on the whole?
Phuket?

It obviously depends whether you have a fondness for dictators. Prayuth is squelching all his opposition and it appears he's going to be around for awhile. Most upper and middle class BKK folks don't want elections anyway and they basically pay all the taxes in the country. There's no way the folks up North are at all happy with the present situation. As soon as there's a popular election the whole mess will start up again.
The man is obviously a power mad idiot but something had to be done. The King is an odd mixture of being powerlessly powerful at the moment; he could unite the country but is too sick and old.
I suspect the junta will remain in place until he dies to ensure anarchy and civil war don't break out.

so far down here, better but everyone is waiting to see when elections will be held, yet no dates are set and if there will be change an the red shirts are not allowed back in (thaksin is grooming his son now that his sister has been fucked)
Corruption is being dealt with, The police are pissed cause their rice bowl has been broken
The beaches are fantastic!!!
BUT business owners are crying out for lack of Tourists and big spenders ( the masses of Chinese dont help much)
BUT NOTHING has been even stared down south.( its getting worse but now it is no longer being reported) Moslem fanatics are moving north out of the three lower provinces and gaining a foothold as far north as Chumphon. Unless something is done soon there could be a huge mess
Princess is making her rounds throughout the kingdom as well drumming up support.
The king cant do anything as he is above Politics

I used to say this as well BUT the king ( an queen) are in better health now than they have been for ages and i dont think the people will wait much more than another yearI suspect the junta will remain in place until he dies to ensure anarchy and civil war don't break out.

http://www.hrw.org/news/2015/05/22/thai ... after-coupHuman Rights Watch expressed concern that the date for a new election continues to be pushed back. Earlier this week the Thai government said that it would not keep its commitment to an election in early 2016, saying it would not take place at least until August or September 2016.
“One year since the military coup, Thailand is a political dictatorship with all power in the hands of one man,” said Brad Adams, Asia director. “The date for elections continues to slide, with no certainty when they will happen. Backsliding on respect for basic rights and democratic reform seems to have no end in sight.”
The king cant do anything as he is above Politics

"The king cant do anything as he is above Politics." - He is now. There's never been a coup w/out his tacit approval in the past.
phuket is full of shit. The fact that I am not at liberty to say why proves to me that he is full of shit.

Interesting read about our Strongman
http://foreignpolicy.com/2015/05/21/the ... uth-junta/BANGKOK — On March 25, Thailand’s unelected Prime Minister Gen. Prayuth Chan-ocha asked the country’s journalists for a little goodwill. “I am not saying you cannot criticize me,” he told a group of them at an air force base in the capital, Bangkok. “You can criticize me, but you have to have some understanding.” When asked about how the government would deal with uncooperative reporters, Prayuth’s response was deadpan: “Execution, maybe?”
The general was trying to be funny, but Thais could be forgiven for not getting the joke.

Short term answer; some things got better, some things got worse.
Long term answer; things got worse.

Fuck the yellow shirts and their preoccupation with removing Taksin every time his party comes to power. The south is going to shit and tourist numbers are down, not to mention the export based industries look elsewhere whenever there's a coup.
Thailand will lose out to Indonesia and the Philippines, I bet plenty of new factories will go there instead. However they have that Thai exceptional which deludes them into thinking all the foreigners (tourists and investors) will still line up to come because Thailand is superior.

^ that is the real problem.
The military Government have not resolved 1 problem that was facing Thailand when they took power.
They are, however, keeping a lid on political violence between the Red & Yellow shirts by having draconian, non judicial, methods of removing any protestors. That is enough to satisfy many in Bangkok for now. However, anytime free elections are held in the future it will be straight back to square one.
The 'war on corruption' is directed entirely against the supporters of Mr. T. Yellow shirt supporters who clearly broke Thai laws have gone, & will remain, unpunished.
As with the last time the military took over from Mr. T. they are economically naive & Thailand is racing towards a large economic slump unless something changes radically.

Like i said they only thing they have made NO headway with is the southern Moslem problem

http://englishnews.thaipbs.or.th/milita ... -poll-saysMilitary junta has done a good job in a year performance, poll says
The National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) has done a good job over the past one year in office with a public opinion survey showed the military junta received an average 8.15 scores out of 10 from ratings by respondents.
The survey was conducted on 1,969 people during May 15-22 by Rajabhat Suan Dusit University’s Suan Dusit Poll.
On the question of satisfaction over the NCPO’s 12 months after the 22 May 2014 coup, 50.97 per cent of those surveyed said they were “rather satisfied” and another 33.06 per cent said they were “very satisfied”.
A little over 11 per cent said they were “rather dissatisfied” and slightly less than 5 per cent said they were “totally dissatisfied”.

Best thing that ever happened to Thailand in recent years and I do not know many Thais that would disagree. Police Chiefs removed? Rackets smashed? Kicking out all the useless tossers? Keep at it!

For the last year, they've been busy arresting and charging just about everyone in or remotely associated with the opposition with whatever crimes they can think up. The elections will continue to be postponed until those currently in charge feel that there is no one left to vote for expect for themselves. How long they can keep this going will depend on how long they can keep the economy from tanking.Phuket2006 wrote:so far down here, better but everyone is waiting to see when elections will be held, yet no dates are set and if there will be change an the red shirts are not allowed back in (thaksin is grooming his son now that his sister has been fucked)
