In the last five months I have done plenty of drinking in beer gardens and beer halls, just about every night tbh ,and quite often getting pretty wasted myself and have only once had a bit of bother from a pissed up Viet guy and that was because he kept taking my photo. When his mates saw that I was starting to get annoyed with his behaviour the pushed him outside and that was that. I have found the Vietnamese to be really friendly, polite and curious.
k440, something to do when you're pissed.

My advice - stay in Hue. IF you can get a room that isn't booked. There are a few backpacker run places there which I'm sure you found straight away. Unless the foreigners who run them are clearing out for Tet (I would), at least you will have somewhere to eat and somebody to chat to. Be prepared for food quality to go down hill, as all the regular chief's are back in the provincial home, and they leave the job to the security guard or something. Life is full of different experiences, maybe you'll have an interesting time.
If elsewhere, I would suggest stocking up on noodles and buying a kettle. Viets are like the Borg, when one moves, they all move. It's like someone dropped a bomb that kills every living thing, but leaves all the buildings still standing.

Some of the younger ones have been known to get a bit antsy sometimes when they see an old foreigner out with his super-hot young Viet wife. Doesn't happen much, but it does happen.Hanno wrote:That has been my experience as well. 1. Don't flaunt your young hot Mrs if your over 50.
2. Eat anything they throw at you with a smile.
That should do it.

That used to be a lot worse 20 years ago when my then wife regularly got abused. Not many foreigners back then, hardly an issue today, at least in the cities.Abou-Gor wrote:Some of the younger ones have been known to get a bit antsy sometimes when they see an old foreigner out with his super-hot young Viet wife. 3 years ago in HCM, my American pal got lumps of ice thrown at him by a group of young males drinking at the same place. He didn't just eat it, he threw some back. Then the Borg descended upon his head.Hanno wrote:That used to be a lot worse 20 years ago when my then wife regularly got abused. Learned that lesson long ago: do not get into a fight. Was that on Buu Vien? Nothing would surprise me there.....Abou-Gor wrote:3 years ago in HCM, my American pal got lumps of ice thrown at him by a group of young males drinking at the same place. New Year's Eve is on the 27th. Basically, this year it lasts 10 days........Miguelito wrote:What are the dates this year? I need a schedule a quick 2 night trip to Saigon soon, so need to gauge if I'll be able to make it before or to postpone for afterwards...

I am in Dong Hoi now and I have been told by a number of different Vietnamese people that just about any business dealing with tourists will stay/open for the whole of Tet. This includes hotels, restaurants and tours to the caves at Phong Nha Ke Bang park.

Tet update from Rat City (Danang):
Now experiencing crappy music, drunken teenagers, high pressure mandarin tree hawking, peanut shortages, bar closures, and wall-to-wall selfie taking. It was sunny and 72 today.

Hotel prices have stayed the same , the restaurants that are open and they ain't many perhapstwo or three have added a ten percent service charge, so phatfill or whatever his name was talks a load of bollocks.
