30 years in Thailand and this is the worst i have seen it
Before I moved to Thailand 10 years ago I always read the funnies in a newspaper first. Since I moved here I read the political news first. Much funnier!

Have they got some football competition going on or something?
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
If the yellow twats win the election, they'll probably be spitting their dummies again about Cambodia's temples and bring the relations between the 2 countries back to the volatile situation that it was a few years back.

Nice and quiet in the part of BKK I am in. Time to head to the Black Swan for an IPA; once inside they can protest all they want on the outside.

I was in Bangkok and in Isaan in 2010, during the Red Shirt uprising. Up until now, I would say what happened back then was far more impressive (and scary). It wasn't just Bangkok, in quite a number of Isaan provinces the Red Shirts torched the Provincial Halls or threatened to do so.Phuket2006 wrote: BY worst , i did not mean violence, but the amount of people participating throughout the county and how serious people are taking Thaksins constant meddling and the desire for the whole clan gone. Before it was always mostly in Bangkok.
Okay, as far as the Yellow Shirts (or their successors) are concerned, the Anti-Thaksins, what we're seeing now is on a somewhat bigger scale. However, don't forget that when they occupied Bangkok's airports in 2008 (I was in Bangkok as well), other airports in other parts of Thailand were also besieged. Not really limited to Bangkok, too. That was quite a mess, because it dragged on for what felt like forever. Then there was the full-blown occupation of Government House, also quite a standoff.
I definitely agree, anything could happen. My only point is that this was the case in similar situations in recent years, too, and that as of now (!), nothing really out of the ordinary (by that standard) has happened.Phuket2006 wrote: Yes Bangkok, except in certain spots is Currently calm, ( i am in contact with friends up there daily) but the possibility for something to happen is very real, The farmers are now threatening to blockade the roads in the north if they are not paid.
I watch Thai TV on a daily basis, I know where the crowds are and that they are big. I don't dispute that.Phuket2006 wrote: If u have not seen them , then ur not where they are, did u look at the link? http://landdestroyer.blogspot.com/search/label/Thailand Seems like quite a bit of a crowd to me
As for the Deep South (Yala etc.), I think that's really a separate matter entirely. The situation there has been worsening ever since I first came to Thailand, no matter which side was in charge in Bangkok.
The real question is if they will contest the election, or if it will even take place. They know too well that they cannot win an election, as things are.Juan King wrote:If the yellow twats win the election, they'll probably be spitting their dummies again about Cambodia's temples and bring the relations between the 2 countries back to the volatile situation that it was a few years back.

I always find it surprising that Cambodia is held up as such a pariah state and when one protestor gets killed they rant on about it for weeks in the international press. Meanwhile in Thailand, hundreds get killed and it barely gets a mention. Fucking journalists are still stuck in the cold-war.

Well, I live in Chiang Mai, and there ain't nothing going on up there in terms of anti-government protesting. Just got to Bangkok today, business as usual far as I can see. This one's going nowhere so long as the government maintains discipline and keep the Reds off the street so there is no pretext for a coup. If they get booted before or after an election, you will be very sorry that this occurred though, because if you think the previous Red shirt protests were bad, just wait and see what these will be like.
Suthep has WAAAAAAAAAAAY overstepped his bounds, and his protest is going to dwindle in my opinion. Anyone who knows his history would have foreseen this from the start. Why on earth they chose Suthep as the leader when he himself is a well-known scumbag who is the author of several scams from the past is mind-boggling. If they'd managed to enlist Chuan or someone clean it may have had a chance.

It was worse in 1992. And go way back to 1973 and 1976 and it makes everything since pale in comparison. Thanom slaughtered hundreds and up to a million were on the streets in Bangkok alone.
Thaksin is a piece of shit, but the opposition are even worse. If yellow cunt was in power they would have shot a few dozen people by now. They can't win an election and they know it.
The King is the only one with a shred of dignity in Thai politics.

Maybe you're thinking of the SEA Games which has just started in Myanmar. Cambodia has already picked up 2 silver and 4 bronze medals in the kick-the-shuttlecock championships (seriously -it's called 'chinlone').
I came, I argued, I'm out

The head of the Thai army has warned the country's political divisions could "trigger a civil war".
More like the red/yellow shirts will fuck up Bangkok again - the package tourists in Phuket won't notice, nor will the Russians, punters and pedos in Pattaya or the farmers in Udon.

That. Whether it's about a cold-war mentality or not, SO true.Lucky Lucan wrote:I always find it surprising that Cambodia is held up as such a pariah state and when one protestor gets killed they rant on about it for weeks in the international press. In the '90s when there was zip available about Cambodia except small material mostly talking about the Khmer Rouge, Angkor Wat, and what a tragedy everything was lost (but don't worry because Thailand is next door!) there were endless books, articles, magazines, and videos about Thailand. Just completely singing it's praises. How they're just peaceful and advanced because they're civilized and did everything right, and they have a unique, original culture and great food, and poor them for shouldering this influx of refugees from their savage neighbors but isn't that just ONE more reason to think they're wonderful?! PUKE.
Now you'd think the narrative would change or be somewhat honest. It's like they get a pass.

Well, I'm on a bus from Bangkok to Siem Reap tomorrow morning. Should be fun.

Maybe when Cambodia starts buying more arms from the west and starts being less friendly with China...won't happen.Lucky Lucan wrote:I always find it surprising that Cambodia is held up as such a pariah state and when one protestor gets killed they rant on about it for weeks in the international press. ירי ילדים והפצצת אזרחים דורש אומץ, כמו גם הטרדה מינית של עובדי ההוראה.
Out of Bangkok with no problems, although we did see protesters all over the place when we were leaving...
