I live near (no) Democracy Monument and work in Dusit near the Government buildings. The main issue is the fucking traffic. Lots of buses from the South double parked through Pinklao and SUVs etc from the Bangkok yellows on the weekends but apart from that it is relatively painless. If that twat Suthep thinks he is winning any hearts and minds pissing off the people of Bangkok then he is delued. The Mob have become a real pain in the arse.
Yingluk will get back in. The 'Democrats' keep voting that loser Abhisit in as the leader and he will never win because of his association with Thaksin and the fact that he gets beaten like a ginger step-child every time there is an election. The only vote he has ever manged is from the Army and they don't want to get involved this time. 12 years in Thailand and this is nowhere near the worst I have ever seen. Not even close.

If I understand you, you are putting your family, parents included, on a bus from Bangkok to Siem Reap??cambod wrote:Well, I'm on a bus from Bangkok to Siem Reap tomorrow morning. Should be fun.

Ha! Yes, indeed! Minivan on the Thai side, and a private taxi on the Cambodian side!RobW wrote:If I understand you, you are putting your family, parents included, on a bus from Bangkok to Siem Reap??cambod wrote:Well, I'm on a bus from Bangkok to Siem Reap tomorrow morning. Should be fun.

Including my 80 year old grandma. We still consider her young, since most of the Cambod family lives into their 90's...

Unless I'm mistaken, I believe the Cambod family itinerary involves his 80 year old grandmother riding a bus from Bangkok to Siem Reap, another bus from Siem Reap to Saigon, then a bus from Saigon to Phnom Penh. The last guy to try taking an elderly relative on a road trip that long was Clark Griswold in National Lampoon's Vacation.

cambod will have a fearsome criminal record if that happens, with granny-bashing at the top of his proud list.
Next item on the list:
discount assault and tea-hurling.

Candidates for the feb election were blocked from registering in 6 southern provincesA policeman and a civilian died of gunshots fired by unknown assailants while 153 people were injured after violence erupted Thursday when demonstrators tried to force their way into an election registration venue.
The army chief insisted Friday that the military would remain neutral and said it was up to the election authorities whether the vote could go ahead, but he did not rule out another coup.
Even phuket has stopped them registering,
and Protest leader Suthep declares Bangkok seizure after New Year. its does not look good for ThailandPHUKET: Island protesters on the path to political war, armed with only a mourning gift and whistles, forced the Phuket Election Commission (PEC) to close MP registration ahead of schedule, leaving zero candidates put forward to represent the province.
“We don’t want to have an election on February 2,” said former Rassada Mayor Suratin Liangudom, who led the protest this morning. “Yingluck Shinawatra must resign from all her work in politics, and the protesters in Bangkok must succeed in the formation of the People’s Council before any elections are held.”
“Bring your clothes, food and necessities for our victory may take months. Bangkok residents should clear their work before the New Year. We will shut down and occupy Bangkok a few days after the New Year. We won’t leave even a single inch to let people in the Thaksin regime to abuse us.

The antidemocratic roots of the Thai protesters
To my mind, this is a very accurate description of the political crisis, by a Thai analyst. Some of the comments below by Bangkok farang are truly appalling

Interesting article to read. My own view which has never changed from living a long time in the country is that it's all about corruption, and whatever side ensuring they are in the position to benefit the most from it. Simplistic viewpoint maybe, but for me the rest is attempting to window dress this fundamental issue. Lese majeste is in place ,for example, to prevent anyone from being able to openly comment on the financial status of the monarchy and how such wealth was accumulated. Until systemic political and institutional corruption is addressed I don't see much hope for progress.
It says something about the system that this week that former ex-PM Banharn who was banned for corruption has registered to stand at the upcoming election together with a significant number of similarly banned ex politicians. Thailand seems to have a unique system of issuing temporary political asbos. Better still if you are a policeman or civil servant who commits a crime you don't always get punished, you get moved to an inactive post.
For me it's appalling to see the game that Suthep is playing in trying to start a civil war, he most definately won't be the one in the firing line when it all kicks off.
I do find it interesting that the political situation in both Thailand and Cambodia seems to be moving in unison in certain aspects.

He says there are some truths that he wants to tell the crowd which is that half of the police in black were Cambodians; they are Cambodian soldiers. He says they paid Cambodian money to Cambodian fighters. They brought Cambodians to shoot us. Cambodian soldiers to kill the people.
