Martial Law in Thailand
Martial law declared in Thailand. Army is rolling into Bangkok. TV and radio stations went off air.

Lots of forum chatter about it on thaivisa. Not much hard news on BBC or CNN beyond it has happened. Guess we'll have to wait and see how things play out. Interesting times...

Utterly predictable though. They're trying hard to spin it, saying it's not a coup and the government will run as normal. Bullshit. They'll be running the show until the constitution is manipulated to exclude all Thaksin-sympathisers from being able to stand and handing the government over to the yellow fascists. Red shirts are not going to accept that, so the key is whether the army rank-and-file are prepared to fire on their own kin.
I came, I argued, I'm out
Hope it doesn't affect Eden. I was quite looking forward to popping in there with an 8 hour stop-over at the weekend.

Unlikely. I was there during the 2006 coup and Sukhumvit and surrounds were completely unaffected and everywhere was open and working.

Very quiet, I am in Thailand at the moment.
I am not so sure the Army did this to get rid of the Yellow Shirts. What choice did they have? It had gotten more and more violent i recent weeks, with daily gun attacks and bombings (guns supplied by a few police officers, no less). This week, both parties started converging on BKK to hold massive demonstrations; I think this would have had the potential to end up in a bloody, literally, mess.
Some Thais seem to think that there was information that violent confrontations were imminent, forcing the Army to do their thing.
Look at it from the bright side: hotel rooms in BKK will be even cheaper than they are already.....

I'm flying to Bangkok next weekend. I hope I'm not going to end up being stuck there if they close down the airports again. No wonder the return flight was about $72 taxes included (air Asia )

...unless it is the wish of the Yellow shirts to do so. In which case it will be allowed. They will similarly refrain from violence and allow demonstrations...unless it is the Red shirts in which case one can expect a live fire zone.Hanno wrote:No way will the army allow anyone to close down the airports.logos wrote:I'm flying to Bangkok next weekend. I think the airport will remain open, regardless of Shirt color. The country was made the laughing stock of the world last time round, don't think that the Army would want that to happen again.
But then of course anything can happen in LOS, I guess.
