A curfew has been imposed in Myanmar's second city, Mandalay, following two nights of violence in which local police say two men died.
Reports say a Buddhist man died after being slashed with a sword by Muslims and that another man, a Muslim, was killed on his way to dawn prayers.
Four people have now been arrested.
The clashes erupted on Tuesday evening after Buddhist gangs damaged Muslim shops and a mosque, leaving five people hurt.
They was sparked by a claim that spread on social media that a Buddhist woman had been raped by one or more Muslim men.
The BBC's Jonah Fisher says hundreds of riot police were deployed for a second night on Wednesday as Buddhist mobs - made up of mainly young men - continued to roam the city attacking vehicles as well as shops and mosques.

Police have said that a man has been charged with rape.
Mandalay has more than 200,000 Muslims, a small but significant minority in the city. Muslims are a minority group in Myanmar, which is also known as Burma.
Myanmar has seen several outbreaks of violence targeting Muslims in the past three years.
Much of the violence between the two groups has taken place in Rakhine state in the west of the country, where at least 200 people were killed and tens of thousands were displaced in 2012.
But the violence has since spread to parts of central Myanmar as well, with attacks in the towns of Meiktila and Kanbalu in 2013.
Rakhine violence
Much of the violence between the two groups has taken place in Rakhine state in the west of the country, where at least 200 people were killed and tens of thousands were displaced in 2012.
Many of the displaced - mostly Muslims - continue to live in refugee camps.
Those clashes were sparked by the rape and murder of a young Buddhist woman.
The violence continued throughout 2013. The last reported clash happened in January in Rakhine state, killing more than 40 people, according to the United Nations.
There have been particularly bitter and long-standing tensions between the Rakhine people, who are Buddhist and make up the majority of the state's population, and Muslims.
Most of these Muslims identify themselves as Rohingya, a group that is considered stateless and is rejected by both Myanmar and neighbouring Bangladesh.
The clashes have posed a challenge for Myanmar's nominally civilian government, which was elected in 2010 after decades of military rule.
President Thein Sein has previously said that the Rakhine violence puts the country's moves towards democracy in danger.

There was one Buddhist monk in Burma who has been stirring things up and using the media to do so. Even putting flyers out telling folks not to shop at Muslim businesses.
All abit bonkers IMO.

For Heaven's sake, please let's get things right here, people. I lived in Mandalay from 1997 to 1999. I was teaching English at ILA, Mandalay and engaged in other work. There was a temporary curfew imposed after so-called Muslims stole gems from a statue of a so-called Buddha statue (the gems were supposed to have been hidden inside a secret compartment of the Buddha statue).
The gems were STOLEN by a GENERAL from the military JUNTA which still (despite claims of democracy) rules. Any claims about so-called religious intolerance and Daw ASSK-inspired violence are simply lies widely-spread by said Junta to discredit the leader of the Democracy movement.
If you frigging disagree with me, I was THERE when these lies began to be disseminated and they are STILL being disseminated - it's the same old trick! I WAS THERE when the same lies were thought up and the curfew brought into being. Still these pillocks create and/or foment unrest merely as a trick to discredit Daw Aung San Suu Kyi. But still some ill-informed prats on this (and other) forum(s) fall for the simple trick.
Meet with Burmese who appear from time to time at Rotary Club (Phnom Penh) meetings and talk with the people who have been fighting for a long time for Democracy in Myanmar and you might see what I am getting at.
Please don't fall for the Junta-inspired lies. I know. I was there 1997 - 1999. Don't trust or believe the reports and articles. Please speak to the people who know. Mandalay is a town/city which can easily be exploited - it is full of gullible peasants, but at the same time hordes the intelligentsia (which meets when it can). Moreover, it is a sacred town/city rich in Buddhist tradition - and therefore susceptible.
Some posters here are far too intelligent to buy into all the lies and propaganda - I urge those people to think again and try to see into what is REALLY going on.
Thanks.

The Bangladeshi gov't doesn't hold that position and is very reluctant to accept Rohingya asylum seekers. Hence the boats heading south to Malaysia, which is perceived by many potential refugees as a better option than Thailand as it is a Muslim country.Starving Pelican wrote:One of the problems is that the Rohingya are not actually Burmese; they're border-jumpers from Bangladesh. India's northeast has a lot of them too. This makes the Burmese feel that they have a stronger claim over what happens in Burma.
I have similar sentiments but I wouldn't use the term nationalism as there are many different ethnic groups in Myanmar and many wish to adopt a federal system as this would distribute power more evenly throughout the territory.ken svay wrote:Fuck the burmese and singhalese radical buddhists. The rohingya are victims as are other moslems and even christians. The discrimination is ethnically and religiously motivated and I fear the Rohingya will become a stateless people similar to Europe's Gypsies. Few countries would be willing to accept large numbers of Rohingya as they would be a huge burden to the state because they are uneducated and suffer high rates of disease due to the discrimination they face.

I have little time for conspiracy theories but I have to say this does have a whiff of credibility about it.KL'sFolly wrote: Still these pillocks create and/or foment unrest merely as a trick to discredit Daw Aung San Suu Kyi. I don't accept that that bastard monk Wirathu is being manipulated - he's an evil fucker, but the peasantry - okay. I know a couple of posters have very strong emotional attachments to ASSK and won't broach any criticism of her, but I still maintain this doesn't let her off the hook (totally). She needs to man up and face this challenge by condemning the pogroms.
I came, I argued, I'm out
