Grocery stores in Saigon
Does anyone have a good knowledge of what is available in the grocery stores in Saigon? Hoping to find something like Bayon or Thai Huot there. Mostly I am looking for American, Canadian and French products.

There are loads, Giant, Big C, US Mart plus many other niche shops selling western goods and a variety of online ones. http://www.hcmc.com/supermarkets
I'd recommend you ask your question in this group for more specific locations etc. https://www.facebook.com/groups/expatshcmc/

For the more unusual stuff, go to the two shops on 58 Ham Nghi; they have been making expats happy for 25 years. Just check the sell by/use by dates carefully.tombraider wrote:Moloko Plus wrote:Does anyone have a good knowledge of what is available in the grocery stores in Saigon? For more exclusive stuff (and exclusive prices) go to Annam Fine Food main branch is on Dong Khoi.
Forget Co.Op and the like, lots of junk food and not much else.

Thanks for the list Hanno. I visited a Co-op Mart in the bottom of a D1 mall. I agree. Nothing but junk.Hanno wrote:For the more unusual stuff, go to the two shops on 58 Ham Nghi; they have been making expats happy for 25 years. There's a Gourmet Market in Vincom Centre (I think this is it). Grossly overpriced and nothing really special about the goods.

In District 1: Annam Gourmet Market is at Takashimaya in Saigon Center, and at 18 Hai Ba Trung (re-opens september 2nd after renovations).
Phuong Ha at 58 Ham Nghi and Thai Ha at 60 Ham Nghi have a decent range but as Hanno says, beware of shelf life.
District 2 Thao Dien: look for Annam Gourmet , Koikos, Black Market, An Phu Supermarket.
District 7: Giant Supermarket is good.
Big C supermarkets are OK as well. Mega Mart District 2 (ex Metro) is OK but queues are long at the checkouts.
None are cheap. Unlike Thai Hout etc in Cambodia, in Vietnam all imported products must undergo some quite complicated registration with government (expensive process), and taxes are higher and more rigorously enforced than Cambodia.
