Stick did not read and write Thai before he left NZ. The guy that told him to go for a holiday did, Spent 5,000 hours self taught apart from the lingaphone? old school casettes leaning he rented from the library. He was the cleaner. Stick was controlling 50 million bucks peoples assets. Investment banker. Queen Street NZ.crazyjohn wrote:That Trink was writing back in the 70’s, surely he’s not still alive. I like Stickman for the Readers Submissions. There was some lovely writing there. I remember Pothole Research warmly.
Stick was unique, he learned to read and write Thai before he left NZ. He posted nice pics of NZ in a farewell article about a year ago.
I heard that he sold the site for a small fortune. The Thai Visa site was sold for a large fortune.

It's always amusing to read things posted on forums about yourself when the people posting don't know you and have never met you. Can be a hoot, as Trink would say, but can be depressing too.Jep wrote:Stick did not read and write Thai before he left NZ. The site was not sold for a small fortune, althought. It was worth north of 5 million baht at one stage_, sad he went into parnership.
The Op article says his names Nick. Thats wrong.
I enjoyed Bernard Trinks Friday column Bangkok Post, the Legend had his own office there!. He's still alive
Thailand was really cool back in the 80;s I stayed 5 years. Cheap everything. No problems. It was a blast Samui mostly,a week up in Bangers every month for business purposes.
It was before the internet or anything really and his columns were raw..A busload of Maidens arriving at XXXBar. Hit It,
Amazing to think Bangkok Post allowed him to broadcast that stuff, but Thailand was raw then and the smiles were real Some his rambling online. google Bernard Trink. take a walk down Memory Lane..

To clarify a few things and to kill any silly rumours :
- A majority share of the Stickman site was sold last year. I wanted 10 million baht for it. The buyer wanted to pay 5 million baht for it. We met roughly in the middle. I don't think this is a small fortune.
- I could read and write Thai to a reasonable level when I arrived in Thailand. Studied at the Thai temple in Auckland with John Batt, a Kiwi who had spent many years in Thailand and was a good teacher with sound methodology. I also worked through the Linguaphone course at the same time, over a period of several months. If you are dedicated and disciplined, the Linguaphone course is very good for reading, writing and listening but NOT speaking.
- I was never an investment banker, but then perhaps banker is a euphemism for something else?
