Border crossing between Vietnam and Laos....
... Bo Y...
Very simple question from the Vietnamese border to Attapue in Laos. How doable is it on a bicycle? I am not worried about mountian heights but more concerned about food, water and somewhere to slee p on the way.
Cheers for any sensible replies

k440, something to do when you're pissed.
I’ve no experience, but the 3rd post here has some info from 2013 https://www.lonelyplanet.com/thorntree/ ... by-bicycle
Maybe someone else can provide a more personal or updated info to you.

Thanks for the reply and link, but it only repeats what I already know. The Viet side I am very familiar with but the Laos side is uncharted territory for me. Looking at google maps it appears to be about as inhabited as the moon!

Don't know that place but, i cycled from Luang Nam Tha to Vientiane in the early noughties and always found a place to stay no problem. Food was truly awful back then (i remember bones with no meat and feeling under nourished) , but i was never far way from a river if desperate for water. Looking back i wished i'd had a tent at the time as it would have made my options to stay so much easier.

Yeah , I was in N Laos in April and the food was fucking awful , the same goes for the people. However , in June n July I was in S Laos along side the Mekong and loved it, so now I want to explore the HCM Trail area.

Yet to find a hammock in SE Asia that is long enough to sleep in and comfortable. Got a tent for emergency but as I said more worried about food n water, especially as the rivers in that area have been polluted by all the mining and deforestation that has been going on. Anyway, congratulations on being so quick to fire insults at me. When was the last time you cycled up, over and down a mountain fully loaded, day after day?

Just out of interest, have you ever had to use it yet? I can imagine it being pretty uncomfortable anywhere too warm.horace wrote:Got a tent for emergency ...
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
This may be too late for you but - from the Bo Y border post to Attepeu there isn't a lot - it is forest/logging - but there are quite a few roadside Yao villages where you can get food and drink. You can ride a bike from the border to Attepeu in a day anyway (about 100km, mostly downhill) , so if you stock up on bananas or whatever on the Viet side you will be fine.

Too late for me, but perhaps useful for someone else down the road.
Never made it that far as the headwinds and the rain forced me to turn south at Quy Nhon! Perhaps in three years on my return leg.
Cheers, anyway.

Yeap, but after two weeks of cycling north from HCMC, inc up Bao Loc and Dalat, into 20kph winds one was knackered and when the winds became 30-45 kph it became impossible.
Pussy! Probably the only pussy around that has cycled 25,000 k around Indochina in the last 22 months , and certainly the only pussy you know who is about to cycle round the world inc going from Perth to Sydney and across the Nullabor Plain, pussy indeed.
