And all hell breaks loose.
The guy has a huge following on social media in Vietnam but overstepped the line by a mile.
General Giap is a national hero after having beaten the French in Dien Bien Phu and the Americans a little later; revered by many in Vietnam.

If only the real truth were known about General Giap.

Do some reading on the subject. He has been criticised. I have no real way of really knowing which version is true.Hanno wrote:Meaning?Oldnews wrote:If only the real truth were known about General Giap.
A very dumb comment to make online in Vietnam though. I expect he was showing off.

Fair enough, but then which general during war does not come out with some stains on his record? Either way, he is a national hero and this guy was an idiot. He is lucky that he did not get deported.Oldnews wrote:Do some reading on the subject. He has been criticised. I hope the Vietnamese reciprocated by asking him to list the wars and foreign incursions that the Americans have won over the same period of time as Giap, and by which generals without faults or massacres under their command? The duty of a General is to win. Period. Giap won and kept on winning. He is, rightly, a Vietnamese national Hero.
Another example of an "Ugly American" abroad with no sense of history and with foot-in-mouthitis.
This reminds me of a US Veteran from 101 Airborne who had served in 1 Corps and won a bronze star telling me over lunch riverside in Phnom Penh that.. Never forget OML that America won the war in Vietnam! When I replied that I didn't recall the Victory Parade in Ha Noi he went ballistic! Oh well, if that is what he wishes to believe so be it.

It was more about whether it was himself that made the important decisions, or not. Or whether he just took the acclaim. Can't be bothered to find the references. Sorry and all that.
Giap is deservedly an icon, he won the war against the French and the Americans.Tough at the top for Generals. MacArthur was sacked despite his achievements, too big for his boots.

Apparently Giap opposed the invasion of Kampuchea.
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2013/ ... guyen-giapGiap was the first general to defeat the forces of the US in a war. Flushed with the arrogance of their massive victory, the leadership in Hanoi pushed for an immediate reunification of North and South, and expanded its experiment in Soviet-style economics across the country. But although well-suited to winning a war, the government was inept at running a peace. Giap was said to have opposed the extreme economic measures, but his power was at a low. In December 1978, against Giap's advice, Vietnam invaded Cambodia to oust the Khmer Rouge. Although the initial victory was rapid, Vietnamese forces were to get bogged down fighting a guerrilla war against the Khmer Rouge that would last more than 10 years.
