These happiness index's by the UN are complete horse shit. The index is really a score of how well each countries government is doing in the areas that the UN views as important - development, preservation of cultural values, environmental conservation and good governance. Fuck the individual.
No doubt next year how well we treat our "transgender community" will be a vital data point on our individual happiness..... But what can we expect from the UN, really...
Bhutan does a much better job in measuring their "gross domestic happiness". Here's the factors they consider, ranked:
Psychological Wellbeing (Psychological indicators)
Mental and Spiritual Health (Health and mental health indicators)
Time-balance (Work and Sleep Indicators)
Social and Community Vitality (Philanthropy, Family related indicators)
Cultural Vitality (Native speaker, Domestic industry indicators)
Education (Literacy indicators)
Standard of life (Living Standards indicators)
Good governance (Human rights, political participation, government performance indicators)
Ecological Vitality (Wildlife,Forest,Urban-Rural, Environmental indicators)
On this scale the Nordic countries would likely not do so well, especially on the first three indicators, and you might find that a country such as Laos does exceptionally well.

It certainly is horseshit, I looked over it a few days ago and wondered what the hell any of it was supposed to mean. Bhutan is two places below Nigeria for example, and El Salvador is a few ranks happier than Italy. Cambodia of course is one of the most miserable places in the world, they are happier in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. I'm sure they interviewed plenty of people from the war-torn eastern provinces and didn't just confine themselves to those online in Kinshasa or anything. And it appears that people in Tanzania are not as happy as Syrians for some reason.starkmonster wrote:These happiness index's by the UN are complete horse shit.
