Phatthalung or Songkhla?
Simple question about southern Thailand, as I am running out of time and will probably only be able to visit one or the other which one and why?

Haadyai ! Hands down Horace.
It's a vibrant city. safe. very nice.Massive nightclubs packed with Malaysian sweetie's.
Phattalung is edgy, a bit rough, a dodgy place . Avoid it at all costs.

Haadyai is the largest city in Songkla province. Stray away an you'll be shot by insurgents. It's a warzone down there. Go visit Yala, I did 2006, they told me not to go, I would be killed blah, I went,I loved it, the massive respect shown to me brought tears to my eyes.Stayed 8 days. No one wanted to kill me..maybe I was too ulgy, dunno.horace wrote:Hat Yai was not one of the options!

You say Phatthalung is dodgy and to be avoided but then you say go to Yala! Your answer are neither helpful or useful. As for Hat Yai it sounds like a place from your description that I would avoid at all costs but I need to do a cycle service and according to my sources the only reputable mechanic in the south is in that town. I don't have time to visit Yala city or province. So again I ask which CITY would you choose and why Phatthalung or Songkhla ?

I love songkla, great food, live entertainment in some restaurants, nice beach, visit the lake, climb the Tang kuan hill for the view, the zoo....stay at the BP Samila Beach Hotel, right on the beach, fantastic seaview rooms with full buffet breakfast (around 1,500 baht). there are cheaper GH's /hotels a block or 2 off the beach
Phatt is just another southern town, not much for a tourists.. but good warm souther hospitality..
PS;totally irrelevant, BUT regarding Yala; the road between Yala and Betong is one of the most scenic in Thailand.

Where have you been camping then Horace? Camping on the beach was good in NZ.horace wrote:Good reply from above. Cheers. No hotels for me as I am trying to camp as much as possible from now till S America.
I've heard temples are welcoming to cyclists with tents, but might have an early wake up, and the dogs barking. Maybe churches are better for abit of peace and quiet.
I should imagine the nights are actually nice and cool in a tent with the top sheet off no?

Been camping beaches, national parks and right now I have been allowed to put my tent up in a gazebo in a private resort for a 100bht, electricity, wifi as well. I haven't camped in any temples yet but may have to soon. Temples n mosques are usually okay with touring cyclists I have been told by others. Guesthouses in big cities where there is no camping or just because you need a bed and recharge your phone, wash clothes , etc. Nice n cool without the rain sheet? Not really unless you get a direct wind blowing.

We are planning to go bike touring fairly soon (probably after the rainy season though).horace wrote:Nice n cool without the rain sheet? Not really unless you get a direct wind blowing.
For cooler camping i was wondering whether you can buy what is basically a mozzie net, but with a tent like canvas bottom sewn into it, and a rain sheet when needed? Lack of privacy might be an issue though.

Highend tents like MSR hubba hubba are what are known as three season tents, autumn, spring, summer and are designed to be used in different ways according to conditions. I have an earlier model which has two mozzie panels on the inner tent which may be enough ventilation for European summer but not for the tropics. If it had mozzie panels on all sides it would be better.
I am thinking about buying just a regular net and using that with a ground sheet as privacy isn't an issue for me.

Just completed two years cycling around Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and Thailand. That was a holiday, eat , drink n cycle, not necessarily in that order, and 26,000 k on the clock.
Now I have got my kit reduced, and have started camping an cooking as I need to be budget conscious, Will cycle through Malaysia, and Indonesia two months each, fly from Bali to Perth cycle across Oz, fly to NZ cycle around there, three months each country, fly to S America cycle for at least a year and a bit, fly to Europe probably Spain and cycle to Turkey, hopefully Iran but I am British and visa not so easy, Fly to India and cycle there for at least six months and hopefully cycle into Burma back into Thailand and return to Cambodia in about three years. And if I still have any money left back into Vietnam, China, Mongolia, Russia, the Stans, Africa and central America!
