Songkhla is fucking great. I lived there for quite a while, on more than one occasion. If you happen to be there for the Songkhla Seafood Festival all the better. Forget Phattalung, it's nowheresville...

I agree. I lived in Betong for a while, fabulous mountainous area with amazing history. It's actually cool as in chilly. Loved the place.
I was the only farang living in Betong at the time, 2006/07, though I heard about another one who lived just out of town I never met him.

Cheers for all the advice and mostly sensible and positive comments. In fact, I have been quite surprised at how little nonsense has been posted that I may well post again on different legs of the ride to get more expert opinions and advice, especially so, as I have had a number of pms asking for updates.
Anyway, your opinion was sought and your views were noted and Songkhla it will be, although I love the sound of the ride from Yala to the border my schedule won't fit, shame but it is an excuse to come back again in three or so more years.

Gotta watch out for those long tail monkeys running across the road on the E coast of Malaysia. Some of them are massive. I had one run right in front of the bike and it stopped and stared at me in a most superior way. Mouth agape fangs showing.
I almost thought he was gonna give me the finger.

What camping stove are you using then Horace? Did you find any good enough petrol stoves here? My girlfriend is a great cook (used to work in a restaurant in LOS), and eats mostly Thai style blow yer balls off spicy so i'm looking forward to the street food in LOS. And all those curry pastes you can buy in the market! Dry yellow curry on the beach after a days cycling. Chiang Mai sausage. Issan sausage. Decent som tam. Gai yang.

Then onto Myanmar for a pickled green tea salad.
I'm at my best in a pitch black room, hold on tight baby you'll feel the power soon.

Using just a simple gas cannister n burner, although I am not sure whether these cannister are easily available outside of SE Asis.
