Yala and the muslim south...
I am going to cross at Betong tomorrow and will camp somewhere near the lake for a night or two. What about the rest of the south, in particular the beaches and national parks around Pattani and Narathiwat, safe to do so or a totally stupid idea?
k440, something to do when you're pissed.
i guess
it also
depends on what passport you are carrying.
have risked going through there on the trains but not for quite a while now.
the armed solders accompaniment on the trains dont look like they are there for a holiday at all

Done a fair bit of birding in that area and was always assured that foreigners were not targeted. I did stay away from police stations, government buildings and the like in case the bombs did not get that news flash.horace wrote:I am going to cross at Betong tomorrow and will camp somewhere near the lake for a night or two. I'd NOT suggest camping, Plenty of hotels for under 500 baht/night,
Great people, great food
Betong is an amazing place,
coast would be a nice ride, have only done it by car.
Farangs are not targeted. BUT ....wrong place ,wrong time...

Love the place especially Narathiwat, and Pattani. Betong ain't nothing special except for the sea mist mountain dawn, Yala take it it or leave it. Food fantastic, people wonderful, amazing countryside and plenty of safe places to camp.
It is definitely my favourite part of Thailand and shall return in about two years once I get South America out of the way.

So you felt safe the whole time / locals assured you of safety when asked? I have Thai friends that won't go down there...horace wrote:Love the place especially Narathiwat, and Pattani. The welcoming hospitality of Thai muslims as well as their brothers in Malaysia has been a total revelation to me.Miguelito wrote:So you felt safe the whole time / locals assured you of safety when asked? Not once did I feel unsafe anywhere in the south. Lovely, friendly people, more smiles and hellos than anywhere else in Thailand even from the coppers n soldiers. On the sea mist mountains at dawn as the sun rose a copper brought a themos of coffee to my camp along with a stryofoam box of spicy noodles, he then insisted that I get on the back of his moto to get another k further up the mountain to get a better view, and
what a view. He refused to accept any monies at all and muttered something about allah or islam but I can't remember what it was.
Cheap as well, as cheap as Vietnam if you don't drink beer.
And best of all no tourists, none, I had beaches all to myself.

What about booze in some parts of the south? Are you drinking beer out of a teapot like in Kerala?
No problem camping in Laos and Issan with some fantastic morning views. Lovely people those farmers.
Camped on the banks of the Mekong in Thailand.
