.. and the ride from Betong to Yala
Someone said the ride from Betong to Yala was spectacular but I disagree, good but not spectacular. However, I may have done too many spectacular rides already and thus my brain is now worn out.
The Sea Mist Mountains or The Floating Cloud Mountains depending on whether you are Chinese or Thai/ Malay were very good even though I had to push my bicycle all up for about three k.
Betong , okay nothing special, Yala as boring as fuck, Narathiwat I like the place and I am staying a bit longer. Security is over the top, and the locals are super friendly, I don't feel at all worried about my safety and will camp if weather permits.

Not in Yala as I said in the post it is as boring as fuck. I am in Narathiwat and have been here two days and will stay another two. I love the food and the people here. Slow! I have cycled over 35k in 30 months and a third of that was probably mountains. Anyway, there is no rush and it is not a race but a lifestyle.
Here's a photo of breakfast this morning.

We are currently in Napong, Southern Laos and she said she would like one of the massive flat whole BBQ chickens that the town seems to be full of. So just had that for breakfast with roasted chili dip.
Although when we stayed in one place in Vietnam with no places to eat around at night the owner said (translated through google dich) that she could cook us "Shrimp noodles". So excitedly i said yes. 10 minutes later, knock on the door and...shrimp noodles!
I thought the egg in the top was a nice touch though. Plus the room was the best we've stayed in.
We did Ha Tien to Bo Y border in 13 days. Lovely easy and flat until Dong Xoia. Hoping to spend much more time by the side of the road in the hammock now.
Vietnam, surely the best value in SEA. Thailand, overpriced, getting above themselves. Really looking forward to Issan and the Mekong as we head west to Myanmar though.
Happy days.

PS, what do you use for navigation then mate?
Take any wrong turns much? I swear, sometimes it feels like i'm heading over the river towards Sokha hotel, but
i end up in BKK!

In southern Laos do the Thakhek Loop which is a great truely spectacular ride through and pass jungle, waterfalls, amazing mountain views. It ain't easy and you may have to push a few times but plenty of places to stop an just do 50k a day. You won't regret it I promise. There are lots of very pleasant surprises on the route which most people don't see as they do it on dirt bikes or scooters.
Navigation is just google maps what else do need other than a compass perhaps. Getting lost is fun and I rarely follow a specific plan or route nor do I do much research either. The fun is not knowing , and the journey is nearly always better than the destination.

Got to say that I have heard nothing about that and I am in Narathiwat and have been here four days. The security present does not seem to have become more alert either. Cycled deep into the counrtyside around for the last two days and this morning, I like the area and don't feel unsafe at all.

However, I should add that all three of the big towns I have stayed at Betong, Yala and Narathiwat all have a kind of self imposed curfew and almost nothing is open after 8pm.
