Starkmonster,
Are you basically saying that the problem with Vietnam is that it is full of Vietnamese?
It's funny as the only person in Vietnam who seemed to understand my pigeon english sign language was a very old lady whose motorbike i got going.
I swear it took us 15 minutes to order a bottle of water in a shop once. And i can't believe it's anything to do with the fact that i'm abit of a twat as they knew nothing about me.
Loved Laos and Issan. My girlfriend always says she likes Laos people.

The meat is first fried with garlic before being added to the broth. The guy who started this did so during the late 70's when food was in short supply and he looked for a way to add flavor. He still runs his restaurant.spitthedog wrote:All the regular Pho's i've ever eaten were more watery than the broth like soup you get with the thai noodle soup.Hanno wrote:No. I love Thai food but few things can beat a good Pho Thin.spitthedog wrote:kinard wrote:Thai noodle soup beats Viet Pho any day of the week though.
What is the Thin part then?

Laotians are very laid back. Great if you are just visiting; nightmare if you are trying to get a job done.spitthedog wrote:Starkmonster,

The lack of English is really holding Vietnam back, but then the same is true in Thailand and Laos.
Pigeon English?

I have in the past complained about the laziness and incompetence of Khmer staff.Hanno wrote: ... Laotians are very laid back. Great if you are just visiting; nightmare if you are trying to get a job done.
A few years back I also had 400 staff working for me in Laos.
On a good day I might have got a full days work out of 50 of them.

I’ve seen a few threads (here, TOF, Facebook), extolling the virtues of another country in Asia where the poster doesn’t yet live or is moving too, or they are going home and give the reasons why, like we care.
Six months later they come back to the mouldy bosom of lady Cambodia.

Well, I for one hope that this current quinquennium comes to an end soon.starkmonster wrote: ... I find that at odds with my experience- well certainly as far as Hanoi, Da Nang and Saigon are concerned - for the most part I find the Vietnamese, especially the younger generation have excellent English and a great understanding of western humour and sarcasm. Just reading any of the vietnamese noticeboards you notice how many can right coherent and intelligent English.Hanno wrote:

As for the Laotians, great people but definitely the cats of Asia. I recall trying to get transport in Savanaket at 1pm, sŏrngtăaou, taxi or anything was impossible. They just wanted to sleep.

Well, I live and work in Vietnam and even in Sa Pa, a tourism hub, English is hardly spoken outside hotels. Taxi drivers, policemen, shop owners, etc. hardly ever speak English. Sure, there are many younger kids now that went to private schools and speak good English; but these are rather the exception than the rule.

Current development, here in Phnom Penh has gotten to me, the traffic for one, is at a standstill, taking me hours to get through, it stinks, whatup with all those single drivers in large suv's blocking everything around downtown. It used to be much more cozy in the walkabout days, the slick is coming, making me feel old and redundant. Ho chi minh, there were more aggressive locals, I still like the more humble Khmer attitude in general. Hipsters, why are they here? It's too hot for manbuns and beards, just don't get it. But yeah, more metro than macho around here these days, which makes me consider seeking other hunting grounds.

BTW - technically avacados are not vegan, so there
