Lots of very new 2 and 3 star hotels which are pretty good value for money.Youn Hoo Fatt wrote:“nhà nghỉ” into google maps gives one $5 place in saigon if that full there are 1 or 2 at $8 then up it goes too far
my recollection of saigon long ago was that value accommodation is hard to find, cant see that that has changed but am willing to be corrected
Vietnam - best value in SEA

Plenty of 12$ guesthouses around Co Giang and 12 $ guesthouses in Vietnam are better than just about every 20 $ hotel in Malaysia n Indonesia. Usually ac, fridge, TV with a few English language channels, decent mattresses and a decent enough space to swing more than a cat.

In Cao Bang a couple of weeks ago I stayed in the best available hotel. Room was big enough for a football team, there were 200+ TV channels, the mattress was like concrete (which I like), A/C, minibar, a cute receptionist, balcony with view of the rive and all that for VND 300,000 (USD 13).horace wrote:Plenty of 12$ guesthouses around Co Giang and 12 $ guesthouses in Vietnam are better than just about every 20 $ hotel in Malaysia n Indonesia. I have been to dozens of Nha Nghi - always been told "no foreigners".. Perhaps in Qui Nhon they might have accepted them but they are not allowed to by law as they do not have permission.
I helped set-up a guesthouse here. I do know the rules. with or without my gf, the rules are simple, they don't have permission to host foreigners. especialy in the highlands.
might have stayed at one near hospital once.
my hotel is only 3 mill a month at the mo so hardly a ball-breaker

Vietnam is not only best value $ wise but also the service is of a high standard and goes a long way in the enjoyment of the experience overall.
Since first going there 12 or so years ago, I have been waxing lyrical about the country as a travel destination ever since.
On the first trip, I recall a double room 'bungalow' (2 double beds) in a Mui Ne resort, tv(30 channels), mini bar, AC, en suite, beach chair, and breakfast was $!0 per night, stayed a week and went back a month or so later for another 3 days.
In 2005/6 the exchange rate was around VND12,000 / $US1, now it is nearly double that.

I lived in Hà Nội for a total of 6 years and am still there a few times a month. Obviously you can spend huge amounts of money on food, drinks and rent if you are inclined to do so. On the other hand, there are a plethora of cheap and medium range restaurants with cuisines from across the world. It is certainly cheaper than Bangkok, KL, Vientiane, and PP though maybe similar to SR.RickyBobby wrote:Anyone ever live in Hanoi? The big drawback is the pollution, especially in winter. Most polluted city in SE Asia.

You are wrong, I have stayed in both nhà nghỉ and nhà trọ many times, especially in the highlands, I have been going to the highlands long before real hotels started popping up and local guest houses were the only option.AnassRamaIV wrote:I have been to dozens of Nha Nghi - always been told "no foreigners".. Hi Hanno, is the climate more desirable ? When you compare to SR, it it mainly rent, or is it also food too. How about electric? Are the people just as friendly and amenable as Khmer?Hanno wrote:I lived in Hà Nội for a total of 6 years and am still there a few times a month.
