https://pattayaone.news/en/income-state ... embassies/Income statement letters from embassies no longer required, confirms Phuket Immigration
November 26, 2018
Phuket Immigration Deputy Chief Lt Col Archeep Jaroensuntisuk confirmed to The Phuket News that a letter confirming income is no longer required by any foreigner whose home country embassy no longer provides such official statements.
The news follows the UK and US embassies announcing that from Jan 1, 2019 they will no longer issue any statements confirming the income of one of their citizens, as is required in applying for many types of long-stay permits-to-stay (also called “long-stay visas”), such as the O-A visa for retirees.
The Australian Embassy in Bangkok has followed suit, effective Jan 7 (see here), and the Danish Embassy in Bangkok has ceased issued such statements with immediate effect
A letter confirming income previously served as a supporting document for obtaining a Thai retirement or marriage visa (‘permit-to-stay’), the British Embassy noted in its release announcing the news.
“The British Embassy Bangkok is stopping the certification of income letters because it is unable to fulfil the Thai authorities’ requirements to verify the income of British Nationals,” the statement said.
“Of course this letter is no longer needed if the embassy no longer issues it,” Col Archeep explained to The Phuket News today (Nov 22).
“However, the foreigner applying for the visa (or permit-to-stay) will still have to prove that they have the funds to stay in the country, such as by showing bank statements that prove the foreigner has B800,000 in a Thai bank account,” he said.

You still need a bank statment or other such income or monetary savings documentation, but you don't have to bother with the Embassy nonsense anymore.

To be clear, this affects expats from U.S., UK., Danes and Aussies so far. Many retirees on thin budgets will struggle with Thai bank seasoning(800k) or monthly(65k) given the strong Baht. Several threads running on tvf currently about this topic.. One interesting thread about immigration officials continuing the practice of accepting bribes from favored agents. 20k baht has been bandied about as the going rate...

I always wondered how rigourously Thai Immigration verified all those submitted Thai bank deposit documents from retirees.

??? you need a photo copy of your bankbook and a signed stamped letter from your bank showing the amount in your account.McPhisto wrote:I always wondered how rigourously Thai Immigration verified all those submitted Thai bank deposit documents from retirees.
not sure how you can fudge that and for now that is the ONLY way to get the extension.
So far immigration has not stated what they will accept if you have a monthly income/pension since after jan 1st the embassies wont issue the letter.
Still no mention how to verify income/pension if your using the combo method
Wait and see
I feel for the guys that retired, came over an spent 4,5,8 million baht on a condo / house thinking that they can live on their monthly pension only to be told now they need 800,000 in the bank.
Be told now? That '800,000 Baht in a Thai bank' requirement hasn't changed for many years. I see that same 800k amount in online articles dated 2009.over the rainbow wrote:I feel for the guys that retired, came over an spent 4,5,8 million baht on a condo / house thinking that they can live on their monthly pension only to be told now they need 800,000 in the bank.

Not to sound like an elitist, but people seriously retire with less than $25k in their bank accounts? Or, as you say, spend all of their disposable income on a condo, have no cash on hand for emergencies, and live pension paycheck to paycheck. What a life...over the rainbow wrote: I feel for the guys that retired, came over an spent 4,5,8 million baht on a condo / house thinking that they can live on their monthly pension only to be told now they need 800,000 in the bank.

Thailand's immigration officers have some discretion in making determinations regarding banking regs for retiree visa's. Regional offices with regional hiarchy. It is not illegal to borrow money to deposit in a thai bank to meet this visa reg. It is further not illegal for a visa agent to lend you this money for a fee. 40$ to stamp a work of fiction was the best unkept secret in LOS. Visa agents and IO's hit the jackpot.

Didn't need the 800,000 in the bank
Thailand, like Cambodia, Mexico, etc etc....many live month to month
Does craving to bang a 19 year old bar girl count as an emergency? If so, the retirees have plenty of money on hand for that.
