Hello to everyone,
my father passed on in London a few weeks ago. He lived in PP.
What formalities does anyone know of that I need to make sure of before calling up the bank for releasing information on his estate?
I'd like to get as much sorted before possibly having to fly out. Information on the net is not very clear on how to proceed here and what to expect from the institutions involved.
I've been to Cambodia trying to sort out legalities in the past and it was more than a pain in the a**e to say the least, so maybe someone living there now can point me in the right direction.
Thank-you very much in advance.
Deceased father in PP

Sorry for your loss to begin with.
I think probably best to contact whichever bank he used here - internationals like ANZ probably have a tidy procedure that applies to all countries they operate in; local Cambodian banks could be a lot more hassle as they wouldn't come across that situation too often. If you can share which bank(s) are involved, I might be able to find out a bit more before you take a flight out here.

There's often an embassy rep who deals with this stuff. You need to contact the embassy in pp.

Sorry to hear about your loss.
You'll probably find it very difficult to get anything from the banks in PP unless your father had a properly executed Cambodian will. And don't expect anything at all from the British Embassy; they're about as much use as a chocolate teapot. Good luck.

That's simply not true.
If you have a death certificate and are a family member (assuming he has no wife or kids here) you can get access to his bank accounts.

Banks shouldn't dole out money to people just because they have a death certificate and are a family member. Sometimes other children or family members can later contact the bank and then it becomes very awkward to have to tell them "Oh, we gave all your dad's money to your sister, get your share from her."YaTingPom wrote:That's simply not true.

You're right and they don't do so (back home anyway - don't know about here).gavinmac wrote:Banks shouldn't dole out money to people just because they have a death certificate and are a family member. Each bank has a list of accounts of deceased customers, often with a sum total of millions. They have specific departments which look after claims and investigate inheritance rights.
A few years ago there was a company in the uk targeting relatives of deceased people telling them that they could find savings of the deceased relatives for a 30% cut. They were a real pain in the ass for banks.
Maybe but if you are a family member sorting out your brother/sister/uncle/son or whatever's shit it would be extremly upsetting and frustrating if the banks here say "Computer says no hab".gavinmac wrote:Banks shouldn't dole out money to people just because they have a death certificate and are a family member. ..and don't forget to get it sorted within 10 years, anything after that the bank must pass the funds to the National Bank of Cambodia.

Agreed - bank won't release the funds just because you are a family member. However, they should give you a statement at time of death so you can proceed with probate. They may release the funds before probate at the request of the executor (will assume they need certified copy of the will & original copy of death certificate along with passport for themselves etc) for covering funeral costs or any other debt, but this will only be released to the executor.YaTingPom wrote:Maybe but if you are a family member sorting out your brother/sister/uncle/son or whatever's shit it would be extremly upsetting and frustrating if the banks here say "Computer says no hab".gavinmac wrote:Banks shouldn't dole out money to people just because they have a death certificate and are a family member. I am not 100% sure of the procedure for this in Cambodia but it cannot be the first time the bank has had to deal with this. I wouldn't think you would have to contact the embassy unless you hit a snag with the bank in the first place
