What will you do when you retire?
Considering the extremely low wages of teaching English in Cambodia, you can't really be saving much money.
Are most of you long time residents thinking about the future? Is it a place you will retire or will you eventually go back to your own country? Of course I'm not talking about the back packer English teachers, but those of you who have been in country say 10 years or more.
I figure I will retire from teaching in Korea in the next 2 to 5 years maximum. And fortunately wages have been good in Korea so I've been able to save a considerable amount of money. But of course it will never be enough. For the most part I hate it here but hang in for the money. But I think I'd much rather be in Cambodia. Some days I just feel like saying fck it and jumping on a plane. But the retirement planning makes me think twice. Bank as much money as I can.
I'm not sure if it's really one question I'm asking. Just trying to get a feel on how you see your future teaching English in Cambodia. Do you feel optimistic, or just killing time till something better comes along.
As an English teacher do you not worry about having enough money when it comes time for retirement?

You're right - you will never earn enough as a regular English teacher to save for retirement. You do need other strings to your bow. If you're potless when you start off you need to be canny enough to invest or develop other talents to make better money.

I'm pretty sure I am currently earning more money teaching here in Indonesia than you get in Korea, unless you were lucky enough to land a gig like I had last time I was in the RoK. I've lived in Korea twice, and enjoyed it both times (more or less). If you don't like the place, get out. There is equal or better money to be made elsewhere, if you have the skills and abilities to go out and earn it.
I plan on retiring to a nice farm somewhere. Maybe even in Cambodia...

I work for one of the top 5 ranked universities in Korea with probably one of the best renumeration packages of any Korean university I've seen. And I would know as I've been here for over 20 years. Thus herein lies the problem. I'm tired of Korea but don't want to walk because of the money.Falcon Randwick wrote:I'm pretty sure I am currently earning more money teaching here in Indonesia than you get in Korea, unless you were lucky enough to land a gig like I had last time I was in the RoK. If your making twice the money in Indonesia, with probably half the living costs, then you've got nothing to be worried about. I just don't think that's the case for Cambodia.

So will you stay in Cambodia? I've seen your posts often in the forums here so I imagine you've been in Cambodia for a while.andyinasia wrote:You're right - you will never earn enough as a regular English teacher to save for retirement. Yes, I've been here 10 years and yes I'm staying. I've 'progressed' over that decade and am currently feeling reasonably secure for the long term. Many posters here have not managed to get in that position and focus their envy on me, so I won't elaborate here, although if you've read enough of my posts you might piece things together. But basically, as FR states, if you've got enough about you, you can do okay.WallaceScott wrote:So will you stay in Cambodia? Onya mate. I didn't say I was pulling twice what you get, only that I am prolly doing as well or better in Indo with, as you say, lower living costs. Last time I was in Korea I was pulling down +US$4500 a month, doing a corporate gig. Free accomm, etc, my only expenses were food, soju and international telephone calls. Korea is good when you are pulling in the bickies...WallaceScott wrote:I work for one of the top 5 ranked universities in Korea with probably one of the best renumeration packages of any Korean university I've seen. andy, you're delusional, seriously.
I don't think anyone begrudges anyone else earning cash. Good luck to you. Personally I probably wouldn't do your job, but then I also probably wouldn't be offered it. People just get tired of getting told about and how smart and wonderful you are at every single opportunity. And, no, it's not just me.
I personally know at least 5 posters on here, 2 of whom are good friends of mine, who make way more than you do. I have never heard them tell people about it. Not once. And I work with some very, very smart people, but not one of them resorts to chest-puffing. it's so much more effective when praise is unsolicited, and comes from others, don't you think?
You may want to learn something from them, bragging is quite vulgar.

That's great. I never knew you could pull +US$4500 a month working as an English teacher in Indonesia. Had I known that I would have left Korea a long time ago. It's about right on par with working at a good Korean university, with of course 5 months paid vacation. The ability to get out for 2 1/2 months at the end of each semester has been my only saving grace. But alas I am 58 years old and if I want I could probably hang in here for another 5-6 years. Mandatory retirement at Korean universities is 65 Korean age. I'm just not sure thats what I want to do. Life is ticking away.Falcon Randwick wrote: Onya mate. Unfortunately I have never been to Cambodia, spent just about every vacation in the Philippines for the last 20+ years. Second home But there is just no money to be made and if you do manage to establish a decent business the Filipinos will find a way to take it away from you. Spent 5 years in Thailand back in the 80's. Those were the golden years So although I have no direct experience in Cambodia, I don't think it would be that big an adjustment considering my history.
I certainly don't want to retire completely, but a seriously toned down life style would be nice. I've certainly seen more than enough guys slip into the bottle in their retirement because they have nothing to do.
My post was only meant to be a brain fart. With a lot of long time posters and residents here, I was curious how they managed to put any money in the bank and save for retirement if they are English teachers.

This is an important topic, and I think people would be interested to hear from more English teachers what approach they are taking, instead of having to wade through yet another vlad / AiA spat (seriously, guys, I think we should organise an intervention for you both).
I'm not a teacher but - at 50 - if I wasn't confident I had my retirement plans in place there is no way I would be in Cambodia.
