Exchange here or there ?? English guys reply
Im wondering if i would be better exchanging before i come out to Cambodia from the UK or if i should use my Lloyd's bank card to withdraw money when i arrive ? I would rather not have aload of cash also and would prefer it to stay in the bank. What are the charges etc like ?

I could answer that but won't as I'm not English.

Just bring it all in cash and then find a really good hiding place in your room where a hooker would never look.

Scotland and N. Ireland don't really use English money & the English sure as hell don't want to use Scottish and N.I. money.

Have £200-£300 worth of USD in cash, and then use your bank card.

Get an FX card (WeSwap currently the best one I think) - all done at the intra-bank rates
No fees for the first 12 months and 1% after that. your Lloyds card will probably be 1-2% and a terrible FX rate.
Already costs about $5 per ATM transaction, no need to pay another $5 from the UK side too
Also bring the first couple of hundred in cash, for Visa taxi etc

bank charges arent too bad,
how long you planning on staying for?
depending on how much you take out, i used to get charged around £7 for taking out $290 (i say $290 because if you take out $300 then it will likely just give you 3x $100 bills which are a nightmare to get rid of sometimes)
not sure what the current charges are now as i have a Cambodian bank
when i was in Thailand in December i think it was costing me close to £10 for taking out 10-20,000baht
but still for the convenience of not having to carry all your cash around all the time, its worth the charges

ATM's should be avoided, you get charged at both ends.
Far better to bring a bundle of clean £50 or £20 notes and find a decent moneychangers, the charges are minimal, fairly close to interbank rate.
If you do decide to use an ATM. take out the maximum amount to minimise charges.

Not necessarily, Maybank for example don't charge for Visa cards.BillyB wrote:ATM's should be avoided, you get charged at both ends.
