First time in Cambodia, what are the general tips for people?
I've not been to Cambodia before so was just wondering what the general amount is for tipping people, ie:
1: Taxi,
2: Tuk Tuk,
3: Motorbike taxi,
4: Bars / Waitresses,
5: Guy in hotel who helps with your bags,
6: Restuarant staff ie waiteress / waiter,
Thanks in advance.

Don't listen to him! You'll tip so much you will be broke by the time you do your help with bags stuff.LongLost wrote:I've not been to Cambodia before so was just wondering what the general amount is for tipping people, ie:

I wouldn't bother tipping the first three, the price is either by meter or arranged beforehand. Of course you can always be generous in rounding off the amount or whatever, depending on the service. With motos and tuk-tuks you are most likely already paying over the odds anyway. For waitresses in an ok place 10% would be appreciated when paying your bill at the end of your visit. No idea about the bell-boy but chances are they'd appreciate a bonus to their shit salary too.

People seriously pay 10% tip on their restaurant/bar bills? I've certainly never seen a Khmer do this, and I don't think I've seen an expat either (tourists, yes).
Depending on the place, we normally give a dollar, or a dollar per server, whether it's a $10 or a $40 bill. Of course there are exceptions.

Going out for a $40 dinner and tipping $1 is a dick move. Your baller credentials should be revoked for that.Miguelito wrote: Depending on the place, we normally give a dollar, or a dollar per server, whether it's a $10 or a $40 bill. Of course there are exceptions.

If it's a $40 bill there are probable more than one server so it would be a dollar per server, which is on top of the gratuity that is already included in the bill in nicer restaurants.gavinmac wrote:Going out for a $40 dinner and tipping $1 is a dick move. Taking America out of the situation, how much do people in Melbourne tip, or people in Paris? If you were in Paris, Vienna, or East Bumfuck Europe, would you tip more?
If I was in the States I pretty blindly tip 20% (after tax); but we're not in the States. Here, I follow the rules and norms that I have learned from Khmers that live here, and/or expats that have been here a lot longer than me.

I remember back in 2004 or so an Australian told me: "We don't really care who the U.S. bombs, as long as it's not Australia. But stop tipping, you're just ruining it for the rest of us!"gavinmac wrote:People in Melbourne wouldn't tip at all. They're animals.

I understand Aussies dont tip cause the staff make dam good money ( my freinds daughter works in a restaurant in Australia and makes $18/hour) vs the states where they dont even make minimum wage (in the states they "assume "ur going to get tips, so that is included as ur salary, but its paid by the customer)..Miguelito wrote:I remember back in 2004 or so an Australian told me: "We don't really care who the U.S. bombs, as long as it's not Australia. Is the OP asking a question about tipping in Cambodia to a bunch of old white dudes - many of whom are trying to shag waitresses on a nightly basis?

Don't tip tuktuks or motodops, just don't. You wouldn't tip the owner of a restaurant so why tip a motodop? I've occasionally given a bit more if traffic was exceptionally bad or I took a different route, but that's it.
As for waiters/waitresses, I'll leave 1000-2000r if I spent under $5-10. If it's over $15-20 I'll leave a bit more ($1-2). Even with expensive meals (for my non-baller self, that's anything over $20/head), I don't think I've ever tipped more than $2-3. Nightclubs can get expensive if you tip $1 every time, so I now avoid tipping much on the rare occasion I go.
